{"id":27655,"date":"2017-11-17T13:03:30","date_gmt":"2017-11-17T13:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bangalorefirst.in\/?p=27655"},"modified":"2017-11-17T13:06:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-17T13:06:00","slug":"iisc-team-wins-gold-at-igem-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bangalorefirst.in\/?p=27655","title":{"rendered":"IISc. team wins gold at iGEM 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"intro\">Triumphed over 300 other teams from around the world<\/h2>\n<div id=\"content-body-14269002-20493076\" class=\"_hoverrDone\">\n<p>With a new device to measure the growth of microbes as well as a novel method to purify proteins, a team of undergraduates from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) took home the gold medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition held in Boston, U.S.A. from November 9-13.<\/p>\n<p>The team triumphed over 300 others from around the world who participated in the competition, which encourages students to build genetically-engineered biological systems.<\/p>\n<p>The six-member core team from IISc. developed a new method to purify recombinant proteins \u2014 that is, a protein enclosed in a gene \u2014 by using naturally-occurring gas vesicles isolated from\u00a0<em>Halobacterial<\/em>\u00a0species of bacteria, which thrives in salt-rich environments. In liquids, gas vesicles help bacteria float to the surface, and using biotechnology and gene cloning, the team was able to purify protein by tagging them to these vesicles.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the team designed a device, Growth Curve and Optical Density Device (GCODe), to ascertain microbial growth through real-time optical density measurements that can even be read through a smartphone. The device, said IISc., is less than a fourth of the price of a commercially-available spectrophotometer.<\/p>\n<p>The team \u2014 comprising Raj Magesh, Sai Padma Priya, Kunal Helambe, Rajas Poorna, Sharath K. Menon and Rohith K.M.S. \u2014 worked on the projects for over six months.
