Apparel brand Ed Hardy brought to India by Arvind Lifestyle Brands has opened its first store at Forum Mall, Koramangala, Bangalore. The new store is spread over 940 square foot, offering men’s wear across various categories including T-shirts, jeans, trousers and shorts, with a new women’s wear range to be launched in the near future.

Typically grunge yet highly fashion forward, the collection at the Ed Hardy store reflects its creator’s journey from an artist to a tattoo pioneer and to popular brands. The collection boasts of bold designs accompanied by the bright solid colours.

After acquiring India operations of three major international apparel brands Debenhams, Next and Nautica, Arvind had signaled its strategy to grow big in the organised apparel market. Arvind Lifestyle Brands, subsidiary of Arvind, which already has an impressive brand line-up comprising Tommy Hilfiger, US Polo Assn, Elle, Geoffrey Beene, Arrow among others, acquiring the business operations of Debenhams has also paved a way for it into the department store segment.

The company has a presence in 950 stores. Around 200 of these are Megamart, 130 are Arvind Store and the rest are spread across other brands. Plans are in place to open 200-250 stores every year in metros and smaller cities.

World’s first startup hotline debuts in Bangalore

In a first, Microsoft Ventures in India has launched a hotline for entrepreneurs to get real-time professional advice on their business and technical queries.

A team of 4 professionals trained by Microsoft will staff JumpStart who will address queries related to accounting and taxation, legal, understanding term sheets and technology. Startup queries will be routed to a team of experts who will offer necessary interventions within 48 hours. The toll free number –1(800) 200-2114 -is open to entrepreneurs during business hours from Monday through Friday and supports Hindi and English languages to begin with. Microsoft Ventures is expecting 15-20 calls in the first few days that the number could gradually go up to 500-1,000 calls a month.

Kattayil Rajinish Menon, director, Microsoft Ventures in India, said, “Sometimes answering even simple questions about how to get started or which service provider to contact can really help startups avoid delays and cost overruns. While JumpStart cannot promise the success of a startup’s business, it can definitely help by educating entrepreneurs how to get started quickly by providing information on the vast resources available today.”

Microsoft Ventures has mapped all the states in India to provide local assistance by partnering with pointspersons at the district level to process queries coming from tier 2 and 3 regions. These could be lawyers, accountants and company secretaries identified in each district. “Our experience has shown that a major pain point for startups across the ecosystem in India, irrespective of their stage of maturity, is the lack of real-time support for various critical queries they face. JumpStart fills a major gap and ensures that startups get professional advice that enables them to make smart business decisions,” said Joseph Landes, general manager, Developer & Platform Evangelism in Microsoft India.

Srivatsa Krishna, secretary in the IT, biotechnology, science & technology in the Karnataka government, said this service will also be available shortly through the Karnataka new mobile governance system MobileOne Platform.

Infosys Leads 5 Indian Projects Shortlisted For Green Oscars

IT giant Infosys leads five Indian clean energy projects that have been shortlisted for the annual Ashden Awards, referred to as the Green Oscars, here Wednesday.

The awards recognize worldwide contributions towards green energy initiatives and a move away from fossil fuels.

Infosys has been nominated in the ‘Ashden Award for Sustainable Buildings’ category for the Bangalore-based company’s cutting edge design of new buildings which helps keep offices cooler and maximizes natural light.
“Since 2008, global IT giant Infosys has cut more than $ 80 million from its energy bills and reduced electricity consumption per staff member by 44 percent. Its success lies in seizing every opportunity to reduce energy consumption in its existing buildings — from reducing the size of chiller plants for air conditioning, to painting roofs white so they reflect the heat,” reads the award nomination statement.

The other finalists include two projects from Maharashtra — Sakhi Unique Rural Enterprise (SURE) and Greenway Grameen — which have been nominated in the ‘Ashden Clean Energy for Women and Girls Award’ category.

SURE is a not-for-profit social enterprise in central Maharashtra that has selected, trained and supported more than 600 women micro-entrepreneurs to sell clean energy products like solar lanterns and cleaner cookstoves to other women.

Mumbai-based Greenway Grameen’s mission is to provide an affordable, desirable cookstove to improve quality of life for Indian women.

The Rajasthan Horticulture Development Society has been shortlisted for the ‘USAID Ashden Energy for Agriculture Award’ for its solar-powered water pump project and Mera Gao Power from Uttar Pradesh has been nominated in the ‘Citi Ashden Award for Innovation in Finance’ category for pioneering the use of unsubsidised commercial micro grids, which have so far connected more than 20,000 families to clean, affordable power.

“India is a hotbed of innovation in sustainable energy: from social enterprises that are meeting the energy needs of some of the poorest people in the country, to an IT giant that’s achieving staggering energy savings across all its business campuses.

“Together all five organizations are leading examples of what can be achieved. The rest of the world should take note,” said Ashden Awards founder Sarah Butler-Sloss.

A total of 14 Ashden Award winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at the Royal Geographical Society in London on May 22.

Winners will receive up to 40,000 pounds and global recognition as one of 2014’s green energy leaders.

Climbing areca tree, made easy

The shortage of labour is a common problem among farmers.

Crops such as arecanut require skilled persons to climb the trees to pluck arecanut bunches from the plant.

What if any member of the farmer’s family can climb the tree? That is what MK Kiran (30), a farmer from Mallesara village in Thirthahalli taluk of Shimoga district, has devised.

Kiran demonstrated an arecanut tree-climbing implement at a plantation of farmer Anantharamakrishna at Peruvai village in Dakshina Kannada district recently.

Kiran told Business Line that the prototype of arecanut tree-climber has been developed under the guidance of DN Venkat of Coimbatore.

Venkat has devised a climber for climbing coconut trees, he said.

Two steel frames, rubber bushes and ropes are the main parts of the arecanut tree-climber.

The basic principle is just like climbing an arecanut tree manually.

First, the steel frames are latched on to the tree trunk – one at the waist level of the person climbing the tree and the other on the ground. The person climbing the tree will have to sit on the frame at the waist-level and will have to pull up the frame at the ground level using his/her feet. Once the process is over, the person has to stand on the lower frame and pull up the upper frame further. These processes will continue till the person reaches the top.

To a query on the chances of these frames slipping, he said the rubber bushes inside the frames tightly hold them to the tree. The two frames are connected by rope or belt.

He has been working on this project for the past four years.

Stating that he had to face failures many a times, Kiran said he did not give up in spite of that. He has around 2-3 tonnes of scrap materials from this project at his home in Thirthahalli, he said.

This farm implement weighs around 6.5-7 kg and cost is around ₹10,500.

Kiran said that he climbed the prototype first.

“When I found it is safe for me, my mother and wife tried it. When I got their feedback that even they can climb the tree with ease, I ventured out to promote this implement,” he said.

Marking the 123rd birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, various programmes were held in city today.

On behalf of the District Administration, Deputy Commissioner C. Shikha garlanded the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at Town Hall premises.

Addressing the gathering, former Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, Dr. P. Venkataramaiah said that the life and sayings of Ambedkar should be emulated to pay respect to the great leader. He reiterated that Ambedkar was never the leader of any particular community but a national leader. He suggested that meaningful and constructive programmes should be organised at all Ambedkar Bhavans and Centres.

M. Ramakrishnappa, Assistant Security Officer, Railway Protection Force, was the chief guest. Sarada Vilas Institutions President B.S. Parthasarathy presided. Honorary Secretary S. Ravishankar and others were present.

Original version of Constitution

Marking the 150th anniversary celebrations of Sarada Vilas Institutions and to commemorate Dr. Ambedkar’s 123rd birth anniversary, an original version of ‘Constitution of India’ complied by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was displayed for public view.

The book was said to have been given by the then Prime Minister Jawaharalal Nehru to the College on July 2, 1954.

Sarada Vilas Institutions President B.S. Parthasarathy speaking to Star of Mysore, said that the book was being exhibited for the first time and the original version has been well protected through years. He said that the book has 255 chapters and signatures of 285 Parliamentarians along with those of Nehru and Ambedkar. He added that the original version was compiled in lithography with golden polished alphabet letters for chapter titles.

Procession marks Ambedkar Jayanti

Over 200 residents of Ashokpuram took out procession from Ambedkar Park in Ashokpuram to Town Hall. A tableau on Ambedkar accompanied by folk troupes was also part of the procession.

Employees of All India P&T SC/ST Employees Welfare Association had a organised a programme at the Central Post Office in Nehru Circle which inaugurated by Kalegowda Nagawara, Visiting Professor, Ambedkar Study Centre, Mysore University.

Indian cobra venom can be used to treat CardioVascular diseases

An effective molecule from the venom of the Indian Cobra called ‘Metalloprotease’ which can be explored to treat deadly clinical conditions like cardiovascular diseases has been identified by the Department of Studies in Biochemistry, University of Mysore.

The study says that the molecule which has been identified has beneficial properties like inhibiting platelet aggregation, inhibiting clot formation and dissolving existing clots.

Dr. K. Kemparaju, Professor, DOS in Biochemistry, UoM, who presented a paper ‘Metalloprotease from Indian Cobra Venom and Mechanism of its Antihemostatic Effect,’ at the two-day National Symposium on ‘Lipids and Cardiovascular Diseases,’ being held at B.N. Bahadur Institute of Management Sciences at Manasagangotri here from yesterday, said that snake venom is a gold mine for extracting specific target molecules and added that as venomous snakes immobilise and kill their prey by targeting vital organs.

He further said that Anti-venom therapy fails to control the local toxicity of envenomation and therefore new therapeutic strategies are in demand for the efficient management of the condition. Further, as venoms are known as the depot of molecules that exhibit high target specificity, there is a greater scope for isolation, characterisation and understanding the molecular mechanisms of toxins that may serve as prototypes for designing therapeutic molecules, he added.

Dr. Kemparaju said that snake bites is an integral occupational hazard among farm workers worldwide and added that human suffering, morbidity and mortality rate due to snake bite was becoming high in South and Southeast Asian countries.

He further said that about 5.5 million people are estimated to be affected by snake bites, of which around four lakh have to be amputated and added that due to the high and incredible degree of target specificity of the venom, the molecules or toxins of venom are extensively explored as analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic tools in biology and human health.

Dr. Kemparaju has research specialisation in Pharmacology of snakes and spider venoms, special emphasis on hyaluronidases and metalloproteases in local toxicity, geographical variations of snake venoms and venom neutralisation.

Athletics is the mother of all sporting activities and is a global sport. An athlete needs good stamina and will power to excel in the top level. Mysore has from time to time producing top class athletes who have gone to represent the country and the State in different levels. One such upcoming talent is Reena George, who recently was honoured by the Department of Physical Education, University of Mysore, for her achievement and record breaking effort in the women’s 400m Relay event in the Mysore University Inter-Collegiate meet. She has represented Mysore University this year in the All-India Inter-University Athletic Meet held at Patiala and qualified for the finals in the women’s 200m event. She is our ‘Star This Week.’

Reena has represented the State U-20. Reena is a product of the Sports Hostel, Mysore and is coached by former International Damodar Gowda, SAK Coach, at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium in city.

Reena is a student at the Teresian College, Mysore and is encouraged in her sporting pursuits by her college and the DYES under the leadership of Suresh, District Youth Empowerment & Sports Officer.

Reena represented Mysore University in the All India Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet held at Patiala and qualified for the finals in the women’s 200m event. She also was part of the 4x400m relay quartet. Reena is a National medalist and also last year won a bronze medal in the All India Inter-University meet.

She has competed in many meets and represented Karnataka in the South Zone and National level in the girls U-20 and finished amongst the winners. She has represented Karnataka in the National women’s games and has won medals in the 200m and relay events. A short sprinter, Reena has the speed and endurance and needs the exposure of taking part in meets where there is stiff competition.

She intends to train hard under the guidance of her coach and with the encouragement coming from the DYES and her college authorities she intends to perform well in the National level in the days to come.

Vintage cars, new cars and bikes steal the show at Automotive Technology Fair (ATF) 2014

Vintage cars, bikes, scooters and vehicles of the new generation stole the show at Automotive Technology Fair (ATF) – 2014, with the theme ‘Green Automotive Technology,’ organised by NIE-Eicher Centre for Automobile Technology (NECAT), Collegiate Club of NIE and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Golden Jubilee Sports Complex of the National Institute of Engineering (NIE) on Manandavadi Road here yesterday.

Automobile enthusiasts irrespective of age and gender thronged the venue to look at the vehicles of the past and present.

Dr. T.N. Shridhar, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Director, NIE-Eicher Centre for Automobile Technology and Co-ordinator of ATF- 2014, speaking to Star of Mysore, said that ATF has been one of the biggest Auto Expos in the State with the previous editions having seen a footfall of about 15, 000 visitors.

He said that it all started when the first Bike Expo was organised in the year 2006 and added that the city needed an Auto Expo of its own to cater the hunger of automobile enthusiasts of the city.

He said that in the year 2007, a Car and Bike Expo was held and the same was repeated in the year 2009. Garnering high success from these events, Automotive Technology Fair took birth which was the first of its kind in the year 2010, he said and added that the vision finally materialised and was carried forward with ATF- 2011.

Dr. Shridhar said that this is the third expo of the ATF in the last four years at NIE.

Speaking about the expo, he said that this year’s expo was being held with the theme ‘Green Automotive Technology’ and as part of ATF, more than 150 Super Bikes and Vintage Bikes along with 35 vintage cars, sports cars and classic cars from in and around the city was showcased at the expo.

Dr. Shridhar said that apart from showcasing the vehicles both old and new at the expo, a Knowledge Pavilion has also been set up where students will give presentations on various trending green technologies.

The expo also housed ‘Do it Yourself’ stalls where the visitors were educated on how to keep their vehicles in good condition and service it themselves.

Gavin Jude Wilson, a Jawa bike enthusiast who has displayed three bikes CZ Jawa, Jawa 250 and Yezdi 350 Twin, said that it is good to have such a kind of expo in city as nothing pertaining to automobiles happens here.

He said that the organising was good and the expo created awareness on what is available in automobile industry. The students of the college explained about the technical aspects of the vehicles and how they work, he said and added that the expo showed us what we were then and what we are now in terms of automobile technology.

Some of the bikes that were displayed were Rajdoot 350, Jawa, Yezdi, BSA 120, a Second World War bike, Enfield 200, Vespa, Lambretta, Super Bikes such as Suzuki Boulevard which was previously owned by actor Salman Khan, Aprilia RSV4, Hyosung GT250R, Kawasaki ZZR, Harley Davidson, customized bike from Vardenchi and BMW 1000RR among others.

City lad Santosh too had displayed his miniature vehicle ‘Mooshik’ and his concept electric two wheeler. He later gave a lecture on ‘Electric Bike Technology’ during the technical session.

Some of the cars that were displayed at the Auto Fair were Porsche, Honda, Volvo, Range Rover, 1973 model US manufactured Jeep Kaiser CJS, 1984 model Premier Padmini, 1961 model Fiat, owned by R. Venkata Raman, an alumni of NIE, 1978 2300 CC Mercedes Benz, owned by Praveen, 1993 model Mercedes Benz 300D, owned by Muthanna among others.

Apart from the vehicles which were displayed, technical sessions on ‘Recent Developments in Radial Tyre Technology’ by T.N. Ramesh, Chief Manager- Technical, JK Tyre, Mysore, ‘Technological Trends in India for Upcoming Emission Norms’ by Ashish Milas Moholkar, Design and Development Engineer, Eicher Motors Ltd. Madhya Pradesh, ‘Innovating in the field of sustainable transportation of goods and people’ by Srinivas Bidare, CEO, Intent Design Pvt. Ltd., Mysore and other topics were held.

The ATF- 2014 which was inaugurated yesterday by U.K. Shenoy, Vice-President (Works), JK Tyre and Industries Ltd., Mysore, will conclude today at 8 pm.

Bowring Institute will flashback to 1890s glory days look

It will have the look of a brand new building built in 1890: Victorian style architecture, a superstructure with brick walls lined with lime mortar, pitched roofing in the main hall with Mangalore tiles, other roofs of Madras style. Every detail of the original will be authentically replicated and one of Bangalore’s heritage structures – the 124-year-old Bowring Institute – will be restored to its former glory by the state archeology, museums and heritage department.

The building is currently sending nothing short of an SOS. “There are deep cracks to the walls and the roofs, both pitched and flat, built 126 years ago, are leaking during the rainy weather and inundating the terraces. There is no proper rain water disposal system. The rain has created ugly fungal patches on the ceilings and caused the peeling of plaster,” rued H S Srikanth, secretary, Bowring Institute, in a plea for help to the state archeology department, in February.

”It is therefore recommended that structural strengthening of the protected monument is carried out at the earliest to not only prevent further damage but also to enhance its longevity of life,” he has added, in the proposal.

For once, the government has responded quickly. The process of restoration was formally kicked of on Wednesday, with the commissioner, C G Besturmath inspecting the protected monument with the department officials. “They had submitted a proposal to restore the Bowring Institute, which is a protected monument. The inspection is carried out. It is visible that structure needs restoration. We have decided to give a go ahead to the restoration process without affecting its original form,” Besturmath told Bangalore Mirror.

“We aim to complete the roof work before monsoons (in June-July). The rest of the work will be carried out in phases later with team of professionals to restore the structure,” Stuart Clarke the treasurer of Bowring Institute said.

The wooden flooring, superstructure, doors, and windows will be restored using both technology and traditional craftsmen, besides a team of conservation architects, engineers, and artists under supervision of the state archaeology department. The department has just completed a state-of-the-art restoration of the Dewan Poornaiah bungalow at Yellandur in Chamarajanagar district.

The restoration at Bowring will mainly be in three phases – restoring the roof to prevent water seepage during rains which is a major threat to the whole structure, strengthening and restoring pillars, walls and the ground level work. Before work begins in the nearly 11 acre campus, soil tests will be done and the foundation strength checked. The superstructure of brick walls constructed with lime mortar, which has developed cracks, will be tested and fixed. The pitched roofing in the main hall, reading room and Black Dog bar, consisting of steel trusses, beams, steel purlins and Mangalore red tiles, and other roofs of Madras terrace type, will be redone. The flat roof, peeling and leaking, will also be restored. Old floors will be relaid in the same design and style as it was.

The doors and windows will be restored using the same wood, colour and design as they were in 1890s.”It is proposed to retain the old foundation, displace the structures built during the past 50 years close to the monument and retain the club activities, and importantly bring back the look it had a century ago,” Anup Bajaj, the president of Bowring Institute said.

A 19-year-old woman suffering from Atrial Septal Defect (hole in the heart) and Dextrocardia with Situs Inversus Totalis, an extremely rare congenital condition (which happens once in 12,000 births), in which the heart, lungs, liver, stomach, and gallbladder are a mirror image of the normal anatomy underwent an Open Heart surgery at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, for repairing the cardiac defect.

Nanjammani from a village near Mysore was leading a normal life until few months ago, when she started experiencing frequent episodes of tiredness and chest discomfort. An initial check-up at a local hospital revealed a startling diagnosis of multiple congenital complications, including a hole in the heart and abnormal placement of visceral organs in her body. As a result of this, doctors were unsure of performing a surgery on her since her anatomy was complicated and highly uncommon. Another critical factor that added to the complication was the patient’s rare blood group (O-ve).

At Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, the surgical team, headed by Senior Cardiac Surgeon Dr. M.N. Ravi took-up this challenging case and devised a thorough surgical strategy to perform open heart surgery, using her own blood.

Dextrocardia that affect the heart function can cause a variety of symptoms such as breathing difficulties, fatigue with heart defects and blue lips and skin. The symptoms are consistent with defects in ventricles of heart. Lack of oxygen in heart can make the patient tired and may prevent in growth as well.

Explaining about the surgery at a press conference at a private hotel yesterday, Dr. M.N. Ravi, Senior Cardiac Surgeon, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Mysore said, “Usually in an open heart procedure, the surgeon accesses the heart from the right side ,standing to the right of the patient as it is pointing towards the left. However in this case, as the patient’s heart and chambers were in the reverse location, we decided to operate on the heart from the other side. The positioning of the heart lung machine was also changed. We also collected her own blood and transfused back during the surgery, which is not common.” “A surgeon gets to treat such cases very few times and we were quite confident of successfully performing this challenging surgery,” he added.

The defect was repaired and closed successfully in a three-hour-long surgery. The patient was comfortably able to sit and eat a light meal the same evening and was discharged three days post surgery. Experts treating her are confident about her full and speedy recovery. She will also be able to resume her household work in about four week’s time and without any further restrictions she will be able to lead a normal family life thereafter.
