This is to help increase its reach to patients in need and fixed a cost of Rs. 30 as convenience fee for connecting and confirming supply of blood to the patient in the respective hospital,” said Ms. Rajneesh.

Pointing out that the government is already offering free service through the 104 call centre round the clock, Ms. Rajneesh said: “Any other innovative health service providers are most welcome to join hands with our department to improve reach and quality of health services.”

With a data bank of blood donors, the app also alerts the donors the moment an order for a unit of blood is placed on the app.

My dream has been fulfilled, says Rajyotsava awardee Ballari Sujathamma

“My dream has been fulfilled. I am very happy.” This was how septuagenarian Ballari Sujathamma, a well-known ‘bylaata’ and ‘parijatha’ artiste, reacted when she heard that the government was conferring the prestigious ‘Rajyotsava’ award on her.

After learning music under the tutelage of her father, Ms. Sujathamma took to acting at the age of ten. Her career as an artiste began with ‘Girija Kalyan,’ where she donned the role of Rathi. Since then, she has acted in various mythological plays not only in Bylaata and Parijatha, but also in theatre, including Ramayana, where she donned the lead roles. She has acted in plays such as Rakta Ratri, Kurukshetra, Dushyasana Vadhe , Daksha Brahma in over six decades of her acting career.

Ms. Sujathamma has also performed in Telugu plays in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

“Acting was the only source of income to feed my family and also to raise my children. I was forced to act in a play when my son, daughter-in-law and my grandson died in a fire accident. Such was our economic condition. Luckily, I used to get opportunities to act and I won the appreciation of the connoisseurs throughout and now Government has chosen me for the Rajyotsava award. I am very happy,” she told The Hindu.

Ms. Sujathamma is also a recipient of Karnataka Janapada, Yakshagana Academy award and the Kittur Rani Chennamma Award.

Though she still gets requests to act in plays, Ms. Sujathamma rejects them owing to age factor. She now imparts training in acting and singing to interested people.

Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Bhushan Gulabrao Borase paying tributes to martyrs at the Banadka Government Higher Primary School near Subramanya on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day.

It was 15 years ago that Border Security Force head constable Ram Naika died following a terrorist attack on the BSF team guarding the Indo-Bangladesh border. His bravery and sacrifice were remembered on Saturday by students of Banadka Government Higher Primary School near Subramanya, where he studied.

A similar programme was held at SDM College in Ujire to remember Mohandasan of Central Reserve Police Force, who died following a terrorist attack in Manipur in 1998. Mohandasan did his PU in this college.

These programmes were organised by the district police. While Superintendent of Police Bhushan Gulabrao Borase attended the programme at Banadka school, Additional Superintendent of Police C.B. Vedamurthy attended the programme at Ujire.

Village residents came in good numbers at Banadaka school and SDM College on Friday afternoon. The Banadka School Development and Monitoring Committee on Friday opened a memorial in the name of Ram Naika where wreaths were laid. Ram Naika’s younger brother and sister participated in the programme.

In Ujire, Mohandasan’s father A.K. Vittaman and mother V.R. Madhavi attended the programme.

At the end of the programme, the district police presented a five-minute film about the work of defence forces that was coupled with information about the two martyrs.

This Mangaluru village is walking a thin line

Residents of a village in Udupi district have been forced to walk on a dangerous path after authorities failed to make provisions for a road or a bridge while constructing a canal as part of Varahi Lift Irrigation Project.

About 250 members belonging to the Schedule Tribe community live in 30 houses in Soni village located in Siddapura village of Kundapur in Udupi district.
Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, Chitte Rajgopal Hegde, a social worker, said the village is located around a lake and there are two temples there.

To meet their basic requirements, the villagers have to reach Karebail which is about one and a half kilometres away.

“They need to walk daily to Karebail junction to meet their daily requirements that includes visiting provision stores, bus stand or a dairy unit. They walk a dangerous path that is about three feet wide on the concrete slab of a drain constructed for the flow of water from forests and hills between Soni and Karebail junction at Dyanooru. In case there is an accident, it is really difficult to conduct a rescue operation,” he said.

If not this route, they will have to travel for five kilometres to reach places like Shankarnarayana.

About four years ago, when the canal was being constructed between Soni and Karebail, people of the village had made several requests to the engineers to make a bridge across the drain.

The work for the canal began in the year 2008 and the project was inaugurated by chief minister Siddaramaiah last year. Priyanka Mary Francis, CEO of Udupi Zilla Panchayat, has assured she will look into the issue. A team is likely to visit the village soon.
