Museum of love

AmulyaBF07apr2013

Amulya Shodha’, a museum in Shimoga, was built by a retired history lecturer, Khandobarao, in memory of his wife. The history lecturer now plans to expand the museum and make it the go-to  place for all students of history. Nrupathunga S K reports.

Inscriptions, coins, monuments, manuscripts, all stand as testimony to the many events in history. As we turn over the pages of history, we come across many kings, who took to the battlefield to either retain their kingdom or to expand it.

Speaking of love, though, only one king comes to the memory of most Indians — Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. This monument has been a source of inspiration for lovers across the globe for several centuries. It’s not surprising then that H Khandobarao, retired history lecturer, better known as ‘Shah Jahan of Shimoga’ was inspired by this emperor.

He has built his ‘Taj Mahal’, a museum named ‘Amulya Shodha’, on a one-acre farm near Lakkinakoppa circle on N R Pura road, 12 km from Shimoga in the fond memory of his wife, Yashodha, who was also history lecturer. She passed away in 2007 due to kidney failure.
‘Amulya Shodha’, as the name itself suggests, is an invaluable search for lost values and culture of the bygone days. It showcases rare paintings of Ravi Varma, coins, inscriptions, manuscripts, weapons, all used by popular kings. The history professor collected these artefacts from various parts of the country.

He wants to create awareness among youth about the significance of lost heritage, culture of the previous era through his museum and thus aspires to make youth more aware of our culture and heritage. Apart from this, it also spreads the fragrance of his deep love for beloved wife Yashodha.

Khandobarao did his schooling and college in Shimoga. Yashodha was his neighbour during his college days. Both of them studied at the Sahyadri College together. Acquaintance turned into friendship, and later, love. They got married in 1972. Khandobarao began his career as high school teacher in 1968.

After serving for nearly five years, he was promoted as a history lecturer for National Pre-University College in Shimoga.

His wife worked as a history lecturer at Kamala Nehru Women’s College. His wife would often say that the Taj Mahal was not only a symbol of true love, but also the soul of true lovers. Inspired by her thought, he made up his mind to build a museum on a one-acre farm after the death of his wife in 2007.

Khandobarao is seeking financial assistance for the development of this museum. He has appealed to people’s representatives, including former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, in this regard. But, his efforts have failed to produce desired results. Khandobarao feels the museum is turning into a mere godown, owing to the presence of a large number of artefacts. He plans to expand it.

But he is short of funds to execute his plan. He has already submitted a proposal to the Centre along with his plan seeking Rs 3 crore for the development of this museum. He wants this museum to remain a symbol of true love and a school of history for future generations.

I want to work there for a few years and come back to India. In the past, people used to go abroad and stay there. Now people go abroad, gather experience and come back to utilize that for our country’s development,” says Ravibalan.

Pankaj Dhake (2{+n}{+d} Rank in PGP) and Mohammed Qasim want to use their work experience for development goals. Nirmal Purohit, gold medallist in Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGM), wishes to work in the field of research and insight.

Thathachari, are seen with Dr. V. Prakash, Madhuri Thathachari, Suttur Seer, Dr. B.A. Dasannacharya and Prof. R. Srinivasan at the awards presentation ceremony held at Rani Bahadur auditorium in city yesterday.

Mysore, Mar. 21 :

The Bhramara Lifetime Achievement Award, instituted by Bhramara Trust of Y.T. & Madhuri Thathachari, was presented to Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Govt. of India and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet, at a function held at Rani Bahadur auditorium of the Bahadur Institute of Management Sciences in city yesterday.

The Prof. Y.T. Thathachari Prestigious Research Awards for Science, also instituted by Bhramara Trust, were presented to Prof. P.S. Anil Kumar from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Prof. Debabrata Goswami from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

The awards, comprising Rs. one lakh cash, a citation and memento, were presented by Suttur Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji.

Dr. B.A. Dasannacharya, former Director, Inter-University Consortium – Department of Atomic Energy Facilities and Dr. V. Prakash, Hon. Director of Research Innovation and Development at JSS Mahavidya Peeta were the chief guests.

Dr. Chidambaram said in his acceptance speech that the scientists must contribute their mite to the progress of knowledge. Alluding to the Higgs Boson experiment that discovered the God Particle, Dr. Chidabaram said that apart from many Indian scientists involved in the experiment, India had contributed 40 million dollars for the machine in which protons were made to collide in a specially constructed tunnel underground. “But the origin of the universe still remains a big question,” he said.

Regarding the restrictions on scientists’ works, Dr. Chidambaram said, “You do not ask Sir C.V. Raman or Ramanujam to submit a project report and set up a committee to decide on whether the project should be funded or not. A scientist must be given the freedom to carry out research works without posing hurdles.”

Dr. Dasannacharya, while introducing Dr. Chidambaram to the guests, said that he had known the scientist for exactly half a century while serving at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. “America had always denied frontline computers to India. Then the BARC got the advanced computers from Norway,” he said and added that Dr. Chidambaram had developed a parallel computer system at the BARC, which, despite being a major achievement, was not appreciated by those in power.

Bhramara Managing Trustee Madhuri Thathachari, the driving force behind the awards meant to bring to fore achievers in the field of science, said in her welcome speech that this might be the last in the series of annual awards presented in the name of Prof. Y.T. Thathachari. She also suggested that newspapers must dedicate a column for scientific research.

Prof. R. Srinivasan, Trustee of Bhramara Trust and brother of Madhuri Thathachari, spoke about the selection process for the awards.

The programme began with chants by residents of Parasara Gurukulam, followed by hymns sung by Annapurna Srikanth, all-India 3rd rank holder in CA exams.

Jyothi proposed a vote of thanks.

Mysore, Mar. 16 :

“Vachana Sahitya should not be just read as a subject to get medals and prizes but the values of the same should be advocated in life,” opined senior Researcher and litterateur Dr. M. Chidananda Murthy.

He was presiding over a programme organised jointly by JSS Mahavidyapeetha and Sri Shivarathreeshwara Religious Endowment for the presentation of Sri Shivarathreeshwara award at Rajendra Bhavan, JSS Hospital premises yesterday.

“Vachana Sahitya should be understood deeper to comprehend the intrinsic social values. It can rejuvenate people in despair. While learning any subject, the teacher is always on the top and the student much below but as the latter picks up knowledge, the gap should reduce. One day the student may take over bringing immense satisfaction to the teacher.”

The award carrying a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 was presented by Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji to Dr. Basavaraj Sabarad, Head of Kannada Study Centre, University of Gulbarga, for his book ‘Sharanaru Matthu Dampatya’.
