It is said that the valuators of Kavyashree’s thesis impressed by the amount of research put into the work have recommended the University of Mysore to convert the same into a book.

by Nandini Srinivasan

When S. Kavyashree expressed her views on life at the graduation ceremony at the Ranga Rao Memorial School for the blind in the city yesterday, she was reflecting on her own life. All the threats that seemed to loom large in her life were turned into opportunities, thanks to her grit and the continuous support that she received from her family and well-wishers.

The visually challenged Kavyashree, who was born completely blind, today has completed her Ph.D in Political Science. Her thesis on ‘Dynamics of Administration in Karnataka with special reference to Kengal Hanumanthiah regime,’ has been accepted by the University of Mysore which has notified that she be awarded the Ph.D and is eligible to receive the degree in the next convocation of the varsity.

Her parents B. Siddaramu, a retired Commercial Tax Inspector and mother Meenakshi, swell with pride at their daughter’s achievements. All the fears and agony that they underwent when they realised Kavyashree was completely blind, when she was around 8-months-old, seemed unfounded as they saw her outgrow her shortcomings and excel in everything she did. Kavya’s elder sister and brother have been her main pillars of strength.

“I was always fascinated by the ‘Doctor’ tag with one’s name. I knew I couldn’t become a doctor because of my blindness. It was my siblings who encouraged me and said I can get a ‘Dr’ tag if I get a Ph.D” she says laughingly and warmly recalls the efforts of one Nataraj, who initiated her into schooling even as her parents were unsure about any school that would admit her. Nataraj, who had just then completed his training in Braille script, persuaded her parents to enrol Kavyashree in the MTM Government School in Ashokpuram. It was here that Kavyashree was ably supported by the teachers of the school, especially the music teacher R. Krishnaiah and Nataraj who drove home the importance of education and fuelled her interest to pursue her education in spite of all odds.

Kavya later joined the Ranga Rao Memorial School for the blind where she studied from 5th to 7th standard. It was here that she strengthened her skills in Braille and was able to give a clear structure to whatever she studied. She came into the main stream of education from the 8th standard when she joined the Jayalakshmi Smaraka High School in Ramakrishnanagar. The teachers were impressed with the kind of interest Kavyashree evinced and were extremely supportive. “They would go slow when dictating notes, so I could take them down in Braille script. They patiently explained when I had doubts and were more happy than me when I scored well in the exams,” says Kavyashree.

The same support from the faculty and friends continued during her PUC at the Sri Vivekananda Composite Junior College in Jayalakshmipuram and her BA degree at the Vishwakavi Kuvempu First Grade College.

“During those days we had to completely rely on Braille and the lectures in class. There were no recorded texts or computers that we use today. My father always read out to me and I made my notes during the lectures. I also knew that if I needed to get a good job and settle down in life, a mere degree would not help. I had to achieve something more which will not only help me overcome my physical disability but also ensure that I can aspire for a decent job” says Kavyashree who has a passion for teaching and is eagerly looking forward to taking up the profession. She has already cleared the National Eligibility Test too and is now preparing for the IAS exams.

Having studied up to MA (Political Science from Manasagangotri) in Kannada medium, Kavyashree till then did not find the necessity to learn English and was happy with the little knowledge of the language she had. However, when she decided to pursue her Ph.D, she met her Guide Dr. Midathala Rani, who insisted that she wrote her thesis in English and encouraged her to learn the language. Though very apprehensive about learning English well enough to write her thesis, Kavyashree decided to give it a try. She also realised that she would need English if she had to use the software for the blind. She did pick up the language quickly and today she speaks English fluently, fluent enough to write articles for reputed national dailies and Journals and present papers at Seminars.

Kavyashree has presented papers on Social Work Ethics and Human Values in Ananthapur, Andhra Pradesh and on Politico Administrative Relations at the Sri Venkateshwara University, Tirupathi.

With the progress in technology, new software helps the blind read and work on computers. Kavyashree took up a six-month computer course at the JSS Polytechnic. The special software JAWS helps the blind to scan books, read and work on the computers.

“The Manasagangothri library has some very good equipment and not many are aware of this. The sad part is that there are so many facilities for the blind but many of them are still unaware. If the people concerned take a little more responsibility in sharing basic information, it would be of great help to the needy,” says Kavyashree and added that all the schemes and projects envisaged for the visually challenged are indeed praiseworthy but will be beneficial only when they are actually implemented.

The first visually challenged lady, who has got a Ph.D degree from the University of Mysore, Kavyashree dreams of earning enough to be able to give a good life to her parents who have given her so much. She proudly says that she helps her mother with all the household chores, except cooking.

The only challenge she faced during her studies is mobility as she had to depend on her father to take her around everywhere. She has no complaints about life whatsoever. “Society has been kind to me. There are problems in everyone’s life and we need to go ahead getting over them. Nothing special about me. May be I had to strive a little harder,” she says.

Kavyashree’s say to the world is to look at her and treat her as a normal person, which makes life much easier. She eagerly awaits the next convocation as she is again back to her books preparing for her IAS exams. ‘Life looks beautiful! I may not be able to see it, but I surely can feel it with my heart !’ she says with a beautiful smile on her lips.

8000 Ayurvedic doctors allowed to practise modern medicine

SUMMARY

In Maharashtra, the BAMS graduates were registered in different schedules based on their educational qualifications.
______________________________________________________

In a huge relief for 8000 Ayurvedic doctors who have obtained their degrees from universities in Bangalore and Goa and have been practising in Maharashtra for the last ten years, the state has now included them in Schedule A of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act and allowed them to practise modern medicine.

Schedule A, A1, B and D of the Act allow ayurvedic and Unani doctors to practice modern medicine. After completing the Bachelor of Ayurvedic medicine and surgery course at Rajeev Gandhi university of health science at Bangalore and Goa universities, students had applied for registration in the Maharashtra council of Indian medicine.

“However we were registered in Schedule E of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act,” says Dr Mandar Ranade, spokesperson for National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA). Schedule E is for those practitioners who do not have a proper institutional background. Hence after completing an institutional degree, getting registered in a schedule for non institutional graduates was not only discriminatory but insulted their qualification, doctors pointed out.

In Maharashtra, the BAMS graduates were registered in different schedules based on their educational qualifications.

“Despite the same degree, curriculum and syllabus these students were registered in Schedule E of the Maharashtra medical practitioners Act,” Dr Suhas Parchure, former president of NIMA, said. He along with others actively led a campaign for the students, as despite residing in various parts of Maharashtra they could not practise modern medicine.
On June 26, the government issued a resolution that included these ayurvedic doctors in Schedule A of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act. “It is a a victory of sorts. These were are institutionally qualified graduates of the Central Council of Indian Medicine recognized colleges and universities and yet they were being discriminated against,” says Parchure.

Mysore :

The 2104 CBSE Regional-level Science Exhibition was held at Army Public School in Bangalore from June 27 to 29.

Over 80 teams representing about 50 Schools from all over the State participated in the science exhibition. The themes included technology, environment, health, energy, agriculture, robotics, mathematical models etc. Other topics included bio-plastic, unmanned aerial pesticide sprayer, fiber optics, windmill and many more.

City’s students — Deia S. Urs and Vibha G. Mugwe — 8th standard students of Vidya Vardhaka Sangha B. M. Shri Educational Institutions, Kuvempunagar, won the first place in the exhibition for their theme ‘Back to Roots: Natural Colours Vs Artificial Colours.’

‘Back to Roots’ is a concept of painting clay Ganesha idols with natural colours extracted manually from seeds, roots, leaves, flowers, fruits and vegetables in order to avoid polluting water even though the idols are immersed in lakes or ponds during Ganesha festival.

Bixa orellana was used to extract orangish red, clitorea ternata for blue, basella alba for purple, geranium for pinkish red, spinach for green, beetroot for brownish red, sandalwood bark for brown, turmeric for yellow. Lime for white, soap stone for cream and dried banana peel for black to name a few. Using these natural colours, three Ganesha idols were decoratively painted and kept at the science exhibition.

Guided by Anupana Padaki, a case study of a popular lake in Mysore was undertaken by the students. Water samples were taken and tested for pollutants and other contamination. Charts and presentation representing the contamination level of water due to immersion of oil painted Ganesha idols in the lake, its effect on the life of the fish and other dependent animals, interview with the locals about the type of Ganesha festival celebrations, percentage of people in the area celebrating Ganesha festival with oil painted Ganesha idols, and with eco-friendly Ganesha idols, and creating awareness to the locals about eco-friendly festival celebrations were shown by the duo at the exhibition.

Immaculate explanation, smart presentation of charts, facts and figures of the study and proper demonstration of the theme helped them to win the first place. They will be representing the Zone at the National-level Science exhibition to be held in Delhi in October 2014.

Meet star singer Ashwin Prabhu

A second year Computer Science student at SJCE in city.

AshwinPrabhuBF 03jul2014

Theodore Roosevelt said, ‘Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing’ and for Ashwin M. Prabhu life has offered him not just a chance to work hard at what he loves doing, but has also given him the best and costliest prize he has bagged till date — a kitty of Rs. 5 lakhs!

Meet 18-year-old Ashwin M. Prabhu from Mysore, who won the ‘Star Singer’ award in the Star Singer contest hosted by Suvarna TV, the finals of which was held on June 8. Ashwin reached the finals with two of his fellow contestants marching ahead of 14 others.

“I’m too young and it’s too early for me to speak about my achievements, as I have a long way to go. I am happy I won the contest and every opportunity like this gives me a chance to work harder and accomplish something more in the field of music,” says the youngster for whom academic excellence too comes as easy as the trophies he wins at music competitions!

A 2nd year student of Computer Science at SJCE in city, Ashwin has been a topper throughout and has no problems juggling between his studies and his passion.

Winning the title was good but what was more heartening and gave him a sense of achievement was when the legendary singer S. Janaki, who was the judge for the finals, was so impressed with Ashwin’s singing that she walked up to the dais and hugged him! “It was very overwhelming for me to be appreciated thus by a singer of her stature…That was an award by itself!” says Ashwin who never failed to impress the other two judges — well-known singer Vijay Prakash and Music Director Giridhar Dewan — throughout the contest.

Starting his music lessons with his first guru S. Ratna, Ashwin learnt Karnatak classical under Vid. C. A. Sridhar and Gamaka vocal with Shubha Raghavendra. He is now training for senior-level in Karnatak music under Vid. R. S. Nandakumar.

With a sound base in classical music, Ashwin’s love for Sugam Sangeeth was kindled by the well-known singer late Raju Ananthaswamy. Raju, who had his own inimitable style of singing, encouraged Ashwin to sing more of songs in the sugam sangeet genre. Music has no boundaries and Ashwin is into all genres of singing today, making him a versatile singer.

“Raju Sir was an embodiment of talent as a singer and a presenter. One needs to learn from him the art of presenting songs in the sugam sangeet genre where lyrics are the real show stealers. He used to bring alive the sentiments of the poets so well that it would reach out to a listener who knew nothing about music too,” reminisces Ashwin who tries hard to follow in his master’s foot-steps. He has accompanied Raju in many music programmes.

Winning has become almost a habit for Ashwin ever since he started participating in contests since the age of 6. Among several prizes and titles that he has won, the most notable ones are he being recognised as Mysore district-level ‘Extraordinary Music Talent’ by the Women and Child Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka, for the year 2010 and winning the first place in the State-level Bhavageete contest twice, conducted by Sugam Sangeeth Academy of well-known singer H.R. Leelavathi. He also stood 4th for Mysore in the Junior Karnatak vocal exam and 1st for Mysore in the Gamaka Prathama vocal conducted by Karnataka Gamaka Parishat. He also presided over one of the sessions of State-level 2nd Children’s Gamaka Conference held at Udupi in November 2011 under the aegis of Karnataka Gamaka Kala Parishat.

Among the TV shows, Ashwin had gone up to the semi-finals in the Sarigamapa Little Champs on Zee Kannada and Little Star Singer on Suvarna TV.

Ashwin has accompanied well- known singers on stage shows in the city and other places and was specially invited by noted singer Sangeeta Katti Kulkarni to sing in Bendre Geethe Yaatre held in city last year.

Ashwin emphasises that there is nothing ‘fake’ about Reality Shows on TV! “All the shows that I have attended have been real and there was no drama or anything fake about it. All comments we get too are as seen on TV and no drama added,” he says adding he doesn’t find anything negative about such shows and on the other hand these shows have given him a chance to experience how it feels to sing in front of a camera.

In fact many of the special judges on the show, who were so impressed with his dashing looks and screen presence on the show wanted to know if Ashwin would join the movies! Ashwin is a very good calligraphist and a creative painter too!

But for this talented youngster who took up engineering instead of medicine, so he would have more time to pursue music, it’s only his academic studies and music lessons right now, as he knows there’s a lot of hard work and dedication needed if he wants to make a mark in the field of music, especially classical music. S.P. Balasubramanyam and Mohd. Rafi are his idols who enchant and inspire him everytime he hears them singing.

His proud parents Mohandas Prabhu, Head-Operations at VST Tillers and Tractors in city and mother Jyothi Prabhu too agree that academics cannot take a backseat. Ashwin’s elder brother Sandeep Prabhu, who is pursuing his MBA at TAPMI, Manipal, has been his constant support.

All the accolades he has earned at such a young age sit lightly on his shoulder for he knows that these achievements are only his stepping stones to a bigger ones.
