Med school first step in Shetty project

Dr. Shetty

Cardiologist Dr. Devi Shetty plans to partner with a local educational institution to open a medical school this year in Cayman as part of his medical facility.

Dr. Shetty, who was in Cayman for four days this week to meet government officials and local partners, also revealed that the first phase of the hospital project was expected to break ground in August this year.

“It is our plan to work with a current local institution to get [the medical school] going quicker… In the [initial] plan, the medical school was not supposed to start till the third or fourth year. We decided to expedite that,” explained local partner Gene Thompson.

The medical school will be based within an existing building at a local institution. Dr. Shetty declined to identify which local institution he was partnering with, saying the deal had not yet been “tied down”.

Dr. A. Raghuvanshi, managing director of Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals, the group behind the proposed project, said: “By the end of this year, the coming academic year, we should start a medical school that will take about 100 students.”

Dr. Shetty said about 700 students graduated in Cayman every year, only one or two of whom opt to take medical courses after leaving school. He said that if there were a medical school on the island where they could train as doctors, nurses or technicians, one in seven graduates would go into the medical field,

“Healthcare jobs are the only recession-proof jobs,” he said, adding that in recent years, the only industry that created jobs was the healthcare sector. “Currently there is a shortage of three to four million jobs in the healthcare sector,” he said.

“No country should depend on foreign medical specialists to look after healthcare in their country. It is very important that the Cayman government and Cayman people train adequate numbers of doctors, nurses and technicians to look after their own healthcare,” Dr. Shetty added.

The hospital project, officially called the Narayana Cayman University Medical Centre, is slated to be built at the High Rock area of East End, where the Shetty group has bought 200 acres of a 600-acre site. The hospital, its associated assisted living facility and research centre will be built on the 200 acres, while related infrastructure, such as a hotel, will be built by Joseph Imparato, who sold the land to the Shetty group and who still owns the adjacent 400 acres.

The initial phase of the project involves the establishment of a 140-bed hospital, which if all going to schedule, should start accepting its first patients in August 2013, Dr. Shetty told reporters at a briefing Friday, 6 January, shortly before flying off island.

Mangalore varsity to offer Tulu certificate, diploma courses

T.C. Shivashankara Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, T.S. Nagabharana, film director, and Thukaram Poojary, president of the Rani Abbakka Tulu Adhyayana Kendra, at an exhibition at the five-day art camp which began on Saturday at B.C. Road near Mangalore. Photo: H.S. Manjunath

Mangalore University will offer postgraduate diploma, diploma and certificate courses on Tulu language from the next academic year.

This was stated by Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy while inaugurating a five-day art camp organised by the Rani Abbakka Tulu Adhyayana Kendra at Sanchayagiri, B.C. Road, on Saturday.

Prof. Murthy said the syllabus and regulations related to the three courses had already been sent to the Government for its approval two weeks ago. Once the varsity got the green signal, the courses would be offered in some of the 187 colleges affiliated to the university.

There was shortage of teachers while a decision to introduce Tulu language as a subject in schools was taken. The three courses offered by the university would now fill this gap. There was also a demand from a few colleges to start these courses, he said.

The university had an Adhyayana Kendra (study centre) on Tulu which played a key role in the proposed introduction of the courses. The faculty available with the kendra would offer their services to teach the three courses to the prospective students.

He said the kendra had funds which would be used to promote Tulu research in association with different organisations. The university had many study centres that promoted culture and literature of the coastal region and Yakshagana, Prof. Murthy said.

Prof. Murthy said the 24 artists who depicted the life and struggles of Rani Abbakka had a challenging task. They had to recreate situations of the past without compromising on the historically proven facts. The life of the queen was an inspiration for women.

“Though we have progressed in different fields, we have lagged behind in preserving our literature and culture.” Prof. Murthy hoped that the art camp and the efforts of the kendra would help in this regard.

President of the kendra, Thukaram Poojary, regretted that people did not have regard for the traditions. People could draw lessons for their future from them, he observed. He said there was a plan to launch an art gallery and a library on the premises of the kendra. There was also a plan to recreate a “Tulu village”.

President of Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy and film director T.S. Nagabharana, Bantwal MLA B. Ramanath Rai were present.

In a First, Girls Outnumber Boys in Private Aided Schools

BANGALORE:

Call it woman power! Karnataka’s college-going girls have just broken the metaphorical glass ceiling and sent the boys packing in campuses across the state.

Girls outscoring boys in exams is passe. Karnataka’s 295 state-funded private degree colleges now have more girls than boys on campus.  For the first time this decade, female enrolment has overshot that of the male category in the state. Fresh data put out by the department of collegiate education (2010-11) shows that there are 1,02,629 girls compared to 96,543 boys in private aided colleges.
Karnataka’s government colleges, too, have recorded a three-fold rise in enrolment of girls in the last 10 years. In 2001, there were 24,477 girls joining conventional government degree colleges. By 2010, their numbers have swelled to 81,161, growing at a much faster pace than the opposite sex. During the same period, the number of male students increased from 33,922 to 84,475.

“This is a remarkable success story of girls in Karnataka. Although girls have been consistently doing better than boys in II PU exams, access has been a big issue. The state government has not only doubled the number of colleges in the last 10 years but decided to make admission into government colleges free for girls, a couple of years ago,” collegiate education director K V Kodandaramaiah, told TOI.

Collegiate department officials say that arts courses have been the overwhelming choice of girls followed by commerce and sciences. Vasanthi Srinivasan, professor of organisational behaviour and human resources management at Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) foresaw the trend. “This was expected. We have been seeing girls making informed choices when it comes to non-engineering programmes. The world over, women’s enrolment has been high in humanities and biological sciences. What we should do now is crack it to get more girls into pure sciences.”

The turning point, if you can call it so, in the gender story, came in 2007-2008. The JD(S)-BJP government nearly doubled the number of government colleges from 182 to 349, pushing up enrolments. The following year, enrolment of women was double that of male students.
