Prof. Shivaram Malavalli has been unanimously elected as Vice-President of The Indian STEP and Business Incubator Association (ISBA) in the recently concluded AGM of ISBA at Bangalore.

He is the Resident Chairman of the San Francisco – Bangalore Sister City Initiative and Chairman & Managing Director of eHealth Technology Business Incubator Bangalore.

He was honoured with Special Award consisting of a Citation and a Medal by WASME (World Association of Small & Medium Enterprises), for his contribution to the establishment/sustenance/growth of SMEs in the Region and his contribution Internationally at China.

He was instrumental in spreading the concept of Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park in Malaysia, Thailand and he was Advisor to the University Technology Malaysia. He has chaired and presented more than twenty-five papers in international and National Seminars and Workshops.

The Indian STEP and Business Incubator Association (ISBA) was set up in 2004 as a registered professional body to promote business incubation activities in the country through exchange of information, sharing of experience and other networking assistance among Indian Business Incubators, Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Parks (STEPs) and other related organisations engaged in the promotion of start-up enterprises.

‘Maulana Azad Bhavan’ to come up at all District HQs

“The State Government has proposed to house all District Minorities Welfare Departments under one roof to be named after Maulana Azad,” said Dr. Qamar Ul Islam, Minister for Municipal Administration, Public Enterprises, Minorities Welfare and Wakf.

Chairing a progress review meeting of the Minorities Welfare, Wakf, Municipal Administration and Public Enterprises departments of Mysore Revenue Division at the ZP Hall here this morning, the Minister said that ‘Maulana Azad Bhavan’ will be constructed at all District Head Quarters of the State to facilitate housing of all departments concerned with minorities welfare under one roof, for which the Government has already released Rs. 50 lakh for Mysore.

Dr. Qamar Ul Islam sought details of minority student-scholarship scheme, when the Minister was told that the Minorities Welfare Department in Mysore had received 10 lakh applications (2014-15) this year as compared to the previous year’s (2013-14) number of 7.56 lakh.

The Minister was told that the applications were received only through online, in order to remit the scholarship amount directly to the beneficiary student’s account.

The Minister was also briefed on the functioning of Minorities’ student hostels in districts coming under Mysore region.

After days of eager anticipation, Hubli city is all set to have its first community radio service from September 21. FM radio station ‘KLE Dhwani BVB-90.4’ will operate from the campus of the BVB College of Engineering and Technology (BVB-CET).

The community radio station will broadcast programmes on folklore, education, research, technology along with entertainment.

Addressing press persons here on Tuesday, working president of KLE Society, Prabhakar Kore and Principal, BVB-CET, Prof. Ashok Shettar said that the ‘KLE Dhwani’ would be the first community FM radio station to be launched by an engineering college in northern Karnataka.

Mr. Kore said that the college had invested Rs. 50 lakhs for setting up the FM radio station with a state-of-the-art studio to ensure good acoustics. Already four radio jockeys selected from North Karntaka and trained at Bangalore had been appointed to conduct radio programmes , he said.

Mr. Kore said that the ‘KLE Dhwani’ would begin its programme with the state anthem (naada geete) and would broadcast programmes from 6.30 a.m. – 11 a.m., and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. To begin with programmes like ‘Naa Hubballiyava’, ‘Namma kale namma baduku’, ‘chavadi chat’, ‘youthgiri’ will be broadcast, he said.

The whole idea was to not only promote folk art from northern Karnataka, but also to provide the target audience with a healthy mix of entertainment and education packages.

The FM radio would have a range of 11 to 14 kilometres in the city and programmes can be heard on mobile phone handsets as well.

Tennis Champ – C. Vasisht

Tennis is a global sport and Mysore has been producing talented tennis players from time to time who have gone on to represent the country in different levels. One such player who has made his mark in the National and International level in the junior boys section is city’s C. Vasisht. A trainee at Prahalad Srinath’s Tennis Academy, Vasisht won the Fenesta National Title in the Boys Under-16 section. He also won the U-16 Doubles and U-18 Doubles title to win a triple crown in the championships which concluded at the DLTA complex in Delhi on Saturday. He is our “Star This Week”.

In the U-16 Boys singles final, second seeded C. Vasisht shocked the top-seeded Karnataka lad B.R. Nikshep 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 and clinched the coveted title. Vasisht saved a match point in the ninth game of the decider in which he had trailed 2-4. Vasisht came back strongly and gained the upper hand with his free-stroking forehand winners and won the title.

Earlier in the semi-finals, Vasisht had beaten S. Manish of Tamil Nadu 7-6 (3), 6-2 to enter the title round. Vasisht partnering Nitin Kumar Sinha of West Bengal won the boys U-16 doubles title by beating Yugal Bansal & Amaan Bhatia 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the final. He completed a fine treble when he combined with city’s Prajwal Dev and won the boys U-18 doubles title.

In the Boys U-18 boys doubles final, Vasisht and Prajwal Dev beat P. Param and Paramveer Bajwa of Chandigarh 1-6, 6-4 (10-7) to win the title.

Vasisht, a Mysorean, has shifted base to Bangalore and presently trains with Prahalad Srinath. Encouraged by his parents has been performing well in the National and International circuit.

Vasisht has made all Mysoreans proud with his feat of being crowned as the National Junior Tennis Champion in the MCC Adidas Tennis Championship in Chennai last month.Vasisht has represented India in the junior ranks and has been making steady progress with good performances in the ITF tournaments in the circuit both in India and abroad. He aims to work hard under the guidance of his coach and with the support of his parents, intends to reach greater heights in this sport in the days to come.

City’s A. Syed Amanulla, Principal and Deputy Director, Govt. ITI, Srirangapatna, a resident of Rajivnagar and H.R. Nagendra Rao, Managing Director, DMS Technology Pvt. Ltd., Belavadi Industrial Area and a resident of Vasu Layout in city were awarded with ‘Brand Ambassador of Vocational Training-2014’ by Ministry of Labour and Employment at a function held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi recently.

While, Syed Amanulla received the award in Salaried Employee category, Nagendra Rao received the award in Entrepreneurship category. Amanulla, passed ITI in Fitter Trade at Kolar Gold Fields, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering through correspondence and B.E from SJCE Evening College, Mysore. Nagendra Rao passed Mechanical Draughtsmanship from NIE ITI, Mysore and runs his own unit which provides jobs to ITI passed candidates.

Among hundreds of applications, a total of 25 candidates from all over India were selected for the award under the programme ‘Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Shramev Jayate Karyakram’. The awardees were honoured by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Will leverage new technologies and deliver education via MOOCs (massive open online courses) as IIMBx

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is India’s first B-school to join edX as a new contributing member. As IIMBx, the B-school will leverage new technologies and deliver education via MOOCs (massive open online courses) to a larger population of learners from around the world.

EdX, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based non-profit enterprise created by founding partners Harvard varsity and MIT, offers interactive online classes from the world’s best varsities. It was created for students and institutions that seek to transform themselves through cutting-edge technologies, innovative pedagogy, and rigorous courses.

“We’re gearing up to create the capability to teach differently and edX is a great platform to extend IIM Bangalore’s educational impact across the globe,” said IIMB director Sushil Vachani. “We are honoured to welcome IIM Bangalore to edX,” said Anant Agarwal, CEO, edX. “IIMB will deliver high-quality courses and new perspectives to the edX learning community and reach learners around the world,” Agarwal added.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for IIMB. In addition to delivering top-quality management education on campus to small classes of students chosen through our highly competitive admissions process, as we have done since the institute’s inception, we will use technology to provide selected management courses to a much larger population in India and the world over,” said Vachani.

Vachani, who took over as director of IIMB on July 1 reiterated that IIMB will embrace and leverage technology to create a social impact. “At IIMB,” he added, “we recognise that the way in which education will be delivered will be radically different in future thanks to technology”.

“Born in a farmer’s family in Paduvarahalli here Dr. K. Bhyrappa excelled in his career to become the Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University,” commended V. Sreenivasa Prasad, District in-charge Minister.

He was speaking after releasing the felicitation volume ‘Spatika Prabhe’ at a function organised by Vijnana Bhavana of Mysore University in Senate Hall in Manasagangotri here yesterday.

Prasad said that Dr. Bhyrappa was a down-to-earth humane person having obtained a Ph.D. Degree from Moscow State University, Russia. He added that Dr. Bhyrappa was a role model for the entire farming community having excelled in Science.

The Bhyrappa couple were felicitated on the occasion.

Former VC of Kuvempu University Dr. K. Chidananda Gowda delivered the felicitation address.

Karnataka’s first hovercraft glides into Mangalore

In what will boost the patrolling capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard in the State, the first of the two hovercraft arrived in Mangalore on Monday. This is the first time a hovercraft will be stationed in the State.

On a sunny morning, the amphibious vehicle rode the waves, skimming over choppy waters, before parking on Panambur beach near the ICG, Karnataka headquarters.

With this acquisition, the hovercraft that has a speed of 45 knots (90 kmph) becomes the fastest vehicle in the coast guard fleet in the State.

“Not only is it fast, it can also go to areas where our ships cannot go. For example, the ships have to keep an eye on the depth of the sea and so cannot approach the shore or have to be wary of shallow seas. The hovercraft can easily land on the shore,” said Gulvinder Singh, Commandant of the hovercraft. He leads a team of 11 men.

Manufactured in the United Kingdom, the Hovercraft H-196 is 21m long and will be used for surveillance, search-and-rescue, emergency missions and to provide assistance to smaller boats at sea.

Coast guard officers said the craft is armed with heavy machine guns, radar and satellite communication — allowing it to effectively keep an eye on the 320-km long Karnataka coastline.

Mr. Singh said the crew had obtained specialised training in London and have been operating the craft along the coast since September. The Coast Guard expects the arrival of the second hovercraft within ten days.

The vehicles will be stationed in a makeshift centre at Panambur, close to the ICG Karnataka headquarters until a permanent hoverport facility will be developed over a 15-acre site at Tannirbhavi beach.

The city’s first pet crematorium has been completed. And it was done so in record time, 15 months, at the cost of Rs2.35 crore. The crematorium is near Sumanahalli on Magadi Road.
The crematorium will begin operations in November and makes Bangalore the third city in the country, after New Delhi and Mumbai, to have a crematorium for pets. Official said, “The crematorium has two incinerators, one for small pets like cats and dogs and a bigger one for large livestock. For the religiously inclined, the crematorium will offer a facility for rituals to be done to dispose of a pet’s ashes.”

Per day, up to 20 animals can be cremated. Veterinary doctors will be stationed at the facility to conduct post-mortem on animals that die due to disease. The BBMP is yet to work out cremation costs but its officials say the fee would be less than what some private operators are charging.

According to sources, the cost would be less than Rs1,000, an official said.
BBMP commissioner M Lakshminarayana said, “The construction of a pet crematorium was undertaken after the High Court issued orders to the BBMP stating that it is an obligatory duty of the civic agency to treat dead animals in a proper manner. Keeping in mind the High Court’s direction we took up construction work and within due time the project has been completed.”

The genesis of the crematorium is found in a PIL filed in the High Court of Karnataka. The court had in 2008 ordered that the BBMP should come up with a crematorium for animals. Five years later, work has begun.

Four years ago, BBMP proposed a crematorium on a five-acre plot in Medi Agrahara, Yelahanka. But the project didn’t take off as the civic body failed to create an alternative road to the crematorium. However, the crematorium site at Sumanahalli is well connected.

Bangalore is already home to South India’s first pet cemetery. Run by People for Animals, it is located on a half-acre plot near Kengeri. However, as with cemeteries for humans, the need for more land prevents the establishment of new cemeteries.

Crematoriums for pets have an advantage over pet cemeteries in that they do not require more land over time. They also are preferred by many communities in Karnataka that cremate their dead and would also prefer to dispose of their pets similarly.

Kannada music album gets a Czech-up

For the first time ever, a foreign orchestra has scored for a Kannada music album. And that too for a song glorifying Kannada and Karnataka.

The Czech Symphony Orchestra in Prague has worked on the album, Ananya Aalaapana, which is the second album by the group, Techies for Kannada, and KChords. The album with seven songs will be released on November 2.

The music is composed by Karthik Somanath, a technical architect at a major IT firm in Bangalore. The lyrics were penned by Karthik and Paawana Poonacha, a content architect. Poonacha, said, “The album is targeted at Kannada professionals living outside Karnataka. These people are exposed to a lot of different kinds and flavours of music. We also wanted to enhance Kannada music with a foreign orchestra,” explaining the need for the Czech Symphony Orchestra.

The Kannada patriotic song, Jagadalli Yelle Hodaru Moodada Mohaka Anubhava, is one of seven songs in the album. This is the only song in the album that will also be filmed as a video which will be released along with the album.

“Our first album had romantic songs. The idea is to show that life is beautiful.”and portray the different flavours of beauty. There are songs about nature, music, peace and brotherhood, love and friendship.”

“It was not easy to get a European orchestra. “The album is self-funded and we are looking for sponsors. The Czech orchestra came down a little on the money front. But is was still quite a bit for us to go there and get the music scored. We wanted the ‘first-of-its-kind’ element to be there and theefore went to great lengths,” said Poonacha.

The KChords team comprises IT and medical professionals translating their passion for music and Kannada into compassion for under-privileged schoolchildren in Karnataka. The proceeds from the album will go to the KChords Trust which will introduce music for under-privileged school children.
