A portrait of Princess Leelavathi Devi, the grand-daughter of Chamaraja Wadiyar, the erstwhile ruler of Mysore province, was unveiled at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) which was earlier called Leela Vihar Mansion in Manasagangotri campus of University of Mysore here yesterday.
Leelavathi Devi was the only daughter of Princess Jayalakshammanni, the daughter of Chamaraja Wadiyar X. The Mansion and its adjacent area were provided to the University when it expanded its campus, adding new facilities.
Chaduranga Kanthraj Urs, the grandson of Princess Leelavathi Devi, and son of K.B. Ramachandra Raje Urs and Princess Gayathri Devi, was the chief guest. Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.S. Rangappa unveiled the portrait.
During the regime of Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, around 500 acres of land, including the Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion (which earlier belonged to Princess Jayalakshammanni), was donated to the university.
When Rashtrakavi Kuvempu was the Vice-Chancellor, the entire property was handed over to the university through Sardar K. Basavaraje Urs, husband of Princess Leelavathi Devi. The whole area was later named as Manasagangotri by Kuvempu, according to a press release issued by the University.
Sardar K. Basavaraje Urs and his family moved to Leela Vihar Mansion (present IDS) later on. The family later shifted their residence to a newly-built house at Jayalakshmipuram, which is also known as ‘Leela Vihar’, handing over the mansion to the university to facilitate its expansion plans, the release said.

Sakina Khatum talks about her weightlifting career and her route to success at the Commonwealth Games

Sakina Khatum hit the headlines with a bronze-winning effort at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, last month. But the 25-year-old promises to do even better at the Incheon Asian Games, come October.
An irony, or call it fate, as polio struck Sakina, one of the four siblings when she was just a year and half old, and since then, it has been a story of determination and fighting all odds.
Four operations below the knee on the right leg helped her to walk, rather than crawl on fours. A doctor advised Sakina to take up swimming to strengthen the leg, and thus began her tryst with sports.
“I was national champion a year after taking up swimming, and for the next four years, ruled the pool in my category. I did not get any recognition or an international call up,” says the girl, who comes from a poor family. “My father is ailing. My brother does not stay with my family.”
She adds, “I came to Bangalore for the selection camp, ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
After three months away from home, I was not picked despite impressing coach Dabas, who referred me to ace para power-lifter Farman Basha. And the rest is history.” Farman, himself restricted to a wheelchair says, “She was lifting only 25 to 26 kgs. To turn her into an international star was a challenge, but with coach Dabas insisting, I agreed. I had no money to spare but asked her to train under me. I found her a small accommodation near K.R. Puram.. Four years down and she has won two international medals (both bronze) for her country,” says Farman.
The journey has not been easy.
“One Mr. Majumdar, from Kolkata used to send Rs. 5000 initially and then increased it to Rs. 10,000 per month for her basic expenses (though that has now stopped after her Commonwealth Games success). He supported her financially, till last month. He even procured her tickets to the Hungary Open, early this year where she won her first international medal. We don’t spend our money (on international tours) and save up to buy supplements – a must for every lifter. When I am short of money, we fall back on local produce,” adds Farman.
“I asked Sakina to move into my place to save up on rent and travel time for training. We train for about four-five days a week,” says the gritty lifter.
For more successes, it is important that the state government and the numerous corporates that endorses sports step forward and make it easy for them to travel and perform at the highest level. Is anyone listening?

Special Judge John Michael D’Cunha, who convicted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case on Saturday, has a reputation of being a no-nonsense judge who gave an indication of his stern approach while dealing with the politically volatile case.
D’Cunha, who has grabbed attention for delivering the historic verdict and is the man of the moment, is the fifth judge to deal with the 18-year-old case after it was transferred to Bangalore by the Supreme Court in November 2003.

The DA case against the AIADMK supremo that took nearly 11 years at the Special Court in Bangalore to reach the stage of final verdict, witnessed four full-time judges before it landed in the hands of D’Cunha.
AS Pachhapure, the first judge of the Special Court, assumed the post in December 2003 but he could not conduct proceedings from August 2005 as the Supreme Court had stayed the order passed by him by clubbing the two cases into one case of disproportionate assets. The post fell vacant in July 2007 when Pachhapure was elevated as a judge of the Karnataka High Court.
Later A T Munoli took charge as the judge but no effective proceedings were held during his tenure due to Supreme Court’s stay order. After his retirement, B M Mallikarjunaiah was appointed to the post.
The trial had made substantial progress as crucial proceedings like re-examination of some of the witnesses by the prosecution, recording the statements of Jayalalithaa in person, etc were conducted during the tenure of Mallikarjunaiah, who retired in August 2012.
MS Balakrishna took over the position in November 2013 and he completed the process of recording statements of three other accused and had almost completed the recording of final arguments when the controversy arose about the certain procedure adopted by him and the new Special Public Prosecutor G Bhavani Singh.
Though Supreme Court upheld the procedure and permitted to continue the service of Balakrishna beyond his retirement for completing the trial, he refused to continue after his retirement on September 30, 2013.
Following this, D’Cunha was appointed to the post in October 2013 and he heard the final arguments afresh. He had passed strictures against the accused and their counsel.
During the course of hearing of the final arguments, he gave an indication of his stern approach by rebuking the defence for what what he called attempts at “protracting the trial and suppressing the facts from the Court.”
Cunha, hailing from Mangalore, had started practise as a lawyer in 1985 and was selected to the post of district judge in 2002. He served in Dharward, Bellary and Bangalore in various positions, including as Secretary to the Chief Justices and as Registrar (Vigilance) of the High Court prior to his present posting.

Justice H.L. Dattu was Sunday sworn-in as the Chief Justice of India. He was administered the oath of office by President Pranab Mukherjee.
He is the 42nd Chief Justice of India and will be at the helms of the Indian judiciary till December 2, 2015. He succeeds Chief Justice R.M. Lodha who demitted office Sep 27.

The oath ceremony held in Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan was attended by Vice President Hamid Ansari, former deputy prime minister L.K. Advani, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu, outgoing Chief Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice A.S. Anand as well as other seating and retired judges.
Before being elevated as the judge of the apex court Dec 17, 2008, Chief Justice Dattu was the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
He was appointed a judge of the Karnataka High Court Dec 18, 1995. Thereafter, he was elevated as Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court Feb 12, 2007. Three months later May 18, 2007, he was transferred to head the Kerala High Court.
Born Dec 3, 1950, Chief Justice Dattu was enrolled as an advocate Oct 23, 1975. He practised at Bangalore in civil, criminal, constitutional and taxation matters.
Chief Justice Dattu appeared as government counsel in the Karnataka High court for the sales tax department from 1983 to 1990, government advocate from 1990 to 1993, standing counsel for the income tax department from 1992 to 1993 and a senior standing counsel for the IT department from 1993 to 1995.
A No-nonsense Judge
A fervent devotee of Lord Ganesha and a connoisseur of Carnatic music, Justice Dattu will have to tackle two major challenges– to bring down the pendency of cases and strike a perfect balance between the Judiciary and Executive.
He takes his case files home, and is a firm believer of completing the hearing in the cases till the last word and leaves no lacunae.
In January, Justice Dattu, while dismissing a PIL seeking to abolish the practice of addressing judges as Lordships, had said, “What we want is a respectable way of address -”sir”, “my lord”, “your lordship” or in some other manner. People address us as “sir”. We don’t have any objection. It is your outlook to address us respectfully.”
Known for his no-nonsense attitude, a tough sense of discipline in the court, who believes in giving no adjournments in the cases, Justice Dattu will be hearing the pending review petition on the legality of Section 377 (the decriminalisation of gay sex).
He will hold the post for a little over a year until his retirement on December 2, 2015-one of the longest tenures for a CJI in recent years. The previous year has seen two CJIs retiring in a year’s time. Justice S Sathasivam retired in April after serving a little over nine months as CJI, followed by Justice R M Lodha, who held the top job for only five months.
Soon after his appointment was announced earlier this month, Justice Dattu had said, “I seek the blessings of all citizens of India. May they give me the courage and confidence to take this Institution to the highest stride.”
Justice Dattu is known for his penchant for hard work and has few outings with his family and friends. He describes former CJI S Rajendra Babu as his guru and says that it was Babu, who had taught him the virtue of hard work. Justice Dattu has also contributed in the field of social work under organisations like the Rotary Club. His tenure will begin at a crucial time when the Centre is pressing ahead with its decision to introduce the new National Judicial Appointment Committee (NJAC) after formally disbanding the Collegium System for the appointment of judges to higher courts.
As CJI, Justice Dattu is scheduled to hear some of the most important cases in the Supreme Court. He will be adjudicating the fate of Delhi Assembly and black money to name a few.

‘Shukavana’ (Rehabilitation Centre for Birds) has come up at the premises of Sri Ganapathy Ashram on Ooty Road here.
The aviary was inaugurated by Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji yesterday.
More than 1000 birds of about 300 species are kept and being nurtured in the aviary. Over a couple of decades, injured birds were being nursed and nurtured by the Swamiji at the Ashram. Now the modern and scientifically crafted aviary will be a safe haven for thousands of birds. Speaking on the occasion, the Swamiji said humans should have concern and love for birds which represent nature. He advised the people not to disturb or harm birds.
Raja Segranm, General Manager, Jurong Bird Park, Singapore, who was present, regretted that human bondage was dwindling with words like love, friendship and mercy turning misnomers. He commended the work of Sri Swamiji in establishing an aviary. Addl. PCCF Ajay Mishra, Feather Friends Forever-USA Founder Ronald Johnson and others were present.

The Eight-day 7th National-level workshop for Fine Arts students organised by Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) now known as Chamarajendra Government Fine Arts College on Sayyaji Rao Road here concluded yesterday.
About 70 students from various art colleges in the country including Bangalore, Dharwad, Gulbarga, Davangere, Mangalore, Baroda, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Jaipur and other places along with the students of CAVA, Mysore, who had participated in the workshop held between Sept. 13 and 20, brought out their creativity in the form of various art forms during the workshop.
Art students in the department of Painting, Applied Art, Sculpture, Graphics and Photography had displayed their works at the CAVA gallery. The students had used wood, cardboard, stones, threads and other materials as the medium for their arts.
CAVA Dean V.A. Deshpande, speaking to Star of Mysore, said that the students received ample exposure in art and a surge to their creativity by getting an opportunity to interact with stalwarts from prominent art institutions during the workshop.
He said that periodic workshops are conducted where renowned artists and lecturers from fine arts universities share their knowledge and skill with the students and added that these workshops were being conducted with the sole objective of providing exposure, insight and training to students to the largest extent possible.
CAVA also organises tours, seminars, internships and exhibitions of works executed by its students and leading artists, he said and added that the workshop would also create a bridge between the students and artists so that the students will get to know about new technologies and also to create a common platform for both.
Deshpande further said that the workshop will help students learn art forms of other States in the country, and also get to know student artists of other colleges.
Deshpande said that the vision of CAVA is to produce students of excellence in the field of art and culture and global artists whose motivational edge comes from Indian traditions and culture, whose competitive advantage is derived from Karnataka in particular and India in general.
Some of the participating students at the workshop said that the workshops being conducted by CAVA was very useful to them as they get to know the arts from various States in the country. They also said that it is also helpful to them as they get a chance to interact with other students and also with experts.
They also said that they were taken to various temples and tourist spots where they got to know the art , traditions and culture of Karnataka especially the style of arts of Mysore.
One of the student said that the workshop was an unique opportunity for the students to interact, exchange opinions and ideas and discuss the present trends in art.
The resource persons during the workshop were Nirmalendu Das of Shanthinikethan in Graphics, K.R. Srinivas of Gujarat in Applied Arts, Sunil Raju of Mumbai in Photography and Photo Journalism and Ramamurti of Bangalore in Sculpture.
The valedictory of the workshop was held yesterday at CAVA premises in which K.R. Srinivas, Sunil Raju and Ramamurti were the chief guests.
The programme was presided over by CAVA Dean V.A. Deshpande.

A day after the sale of passports began in city, Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens popularly known as the Mysore Zoo has sold more than 1,000 passports on Thursday.
Passports will be sold at counters in Mysore Palace, Karanji Lake, Chamundi Hill, KRS, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary and selected star hotels from today.
‘Tourism passport,’ is a single ticket system for visitors where tourists after buying the passport can visit major tourist spots including the Mysore Palace, Mysore Zoo, Karanji Lake Nature Park, Chamundi Hills, KRS and Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary. The passports are available in three colours, Orange (Mysore Vaibhav), Green (Mysore Prakruthi) and Blue (Mysore Panorama).
The Orange passport provides entry to Mysore Palace and Zoo, while the Green one allows entry to the Zoo, Palace, Karanji Lake Nature Park and Chamundi Hills. The Blue passport will permit entry to the Palace, Zoo, Karanji Lake, KRS, Chamundi Hill and Ranganatittu Bird Sanctuary.
Mysore Vaibhav will cost Rs. 80 each for adults and Rs. 40 for children. For Foreigners it would cost Rs. 220 each for adults and Rs. 110 for children.
Mysore Prakruthi cost Rs. 120 for adults and Rs. 75 for children. Foreigners will have to pay Rs. 260 for adults and Rs. 150 for children. Mysore Panorama has been priced at Rs. 160 for adults and Rs. 102 for children. Foreigners will have to pay Rs. 510 for adults and Rs. 170 for children.
Zoo Executive Director B.P. Ravi speaking to SOM said that the sale of passports picked up on Thursday with the counter at the Zoo alone sold over 1,000 passports including 500 Vaibhav and 300 Prakruthi. He also said that tourists in groups were buying passports online and added that the tourists have to specify the date of their visit while buying the passports online.
