The State Government will be honouring journalists by presenting the TSR Memorial and Mohare Hanumantharaya, Development and Environmental Journalism awards for the years 2010 and 2011 at Ravindra Kalakshetra here on Aug. 27 at 11 am.

G.N. Ranganath Rao and Garudanagiri Nagaraj will be honoured with TSR Memorial Award for 2010 and 2011 respectively. Shivasharanappa Vali (2010) and M.B. Desai (2011) will be given the Mohare Hanumantharaya Journalism Award while K.V. Paramesh (2010) and Ravindra Bhat Ainakai (2011) will receive Development Journalism Awards. Narayana Karanth Peraje (2010) and Ajjamada Ramesh Kuttappa (2011) will be given Environmental awards by the government.

Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar will present TSR and Mohare Hanumantharaya awards while Dy.CMs K.S. Eshwarappa and R .Ashok will present Development Journalism and Environmental Journalism awards respectively.

MP Ananthkumar and Justice G.P. Shivaprakash, retired High Court Judge & President of Journalism Award Selection Committee will be the chief guests.

Chikpet MLA Dr.D. Hemachandra Sagar will preside.

Late T.S. Ramachandra Rao (TSR), as the Editor of Prajavani, was famous for his column Choobaana. The government is presenting an award in his name since 1993 which includes Rs. 1 lakh cash prize. Till now, 18 journalists have received this award.

TSR award recipients: G.N. Ranganatha Rao entered journalism field by joining Tayinadu as a Sub-Editor. He also served in Samyukta Karnataka. He worked in Prajavani for 34 years and has authored 30 books.

Garudanagiri Nagaraja joined the movement for a responsible government against Mysore State when he was a student and was imprisoned. He received progressive farmer award also. He first served in Janavani, Praja-matha and later in Kannada Prabha. He has also served as the President of Karnataka Newspaper Academy.

Late Mohare Hanumantharaya was a freedom fighter from Bijapur district. After working as the Sub-Editor and Editor of Karnataka Vaibhava weekly in Bijapur, he joined Samyukta Karnataka as Editor and later became its Managing Editor. He started Kannada’s first digest Kasturi in 1956.

Mohare Hanumantharaya award recipients: Shivasharanappa Vali of Bidar district was involved in freedom movement, journalism, social work, educational, religious and political activities. He worked in Delhi’s Hindustan Samachar for 10 years and later in ‘Uttara Karnataka’ daily.

Mohan Basavaraja Desai: He started a Kannada weekly Darshana and later converted it into a daily Loka Darshana in border district of Belgaum. He has served as an Editor for 50 years in Kannada journalism.

Development journalism: K.V. Paramesh – Entering journalism field through Kodagu’s Shakti daily newspaper, he also served as Mysore Centre Head of E-TV Kannada, Bangalore Senior Reporter & Head of Political Division of Suvarna 24×7 and also in Samyukta Karnataka. His contributions include reports on Nagarahole forest fire, H.D. Kote taluk forest conditions, smuggling and sale of minor girls of Girijana tribes in Mysore district etc.

Ravindra Bhat Ainakai joined Samyukta Karnataka in 1990 and later served in Kannadamma of Belgaum, Aragini, Abhimani and Ee Sanje papers, for three years in Udayavani and later as Mysore Branch Chief of Prajavani. His columns have been published in book form titled Baduku Marada Mele, apart from other books Hejjenu, ‘Moorane Kivi’ etc.

Environmental journalism: Narayana Karantha Peraje – He has been serving in Dakshina Kannada’s monthly Adike since 22 years. He is well-known for his columns in Sudha, Taranga, Udayavani, Hosadigantha, Kannada Prabha etc. He is the author of more than 10 books including ‘Tala Tapasvi.’

Ajjamada Ramesh Kuttappa – Entering journalism through Kodagu’s Veeranadu paper, he later worked in DK’s Kannada Janantaranga and as Senior Reporter in Vijaya Karnataka for 11 years. At present, he is the Kodagu Reporter of Vijayavani. He has penned many articles on Kodagu’s environment, developmental works in forest, Nagarahole forest’s condition etc.

All India Dog Show in city on Aug. 26

Mysore Kennel Club, Bangalore, has organised the 98th and 99th All India Championship Dog Shows at the Dasara Exhibition Grounds in city on Aug. 26 at 9 am.

Dy. Commissioner P.S. Vastrad will inaugurate the 98th dog show while City Police Commissioner K.L. Sudheer will inaugurate the 99th show.

MCC Commissioner Dr. M.R.Ravi will release the show souvenir and Club Patron Dr. B.C.Ramakrishna will preside.

KEA Chairman and Local Show Committee Chairman B.P.Manjunath, Club President Prof. L.Ranganath and Hon. Secretary Dr. D.T. Jayaramaiah will be present.

More than 435 dogs of over 45 different breeds from different parts of the country are participating in the dog show.

The dogs will be judged by international judges Dedy Tjahjono from Indonesia and David Strachan from Australia.

Apart from the dog show, dog food manufacturers, medical companies and other manufacturers of dog products will also exhibit and sell their products at the show.

The PG Centre had organised a felicitation programme in honour of Prof. Tareen.

On the occasion, Prof. Tareen, shared his wisdom gathered through his forty five years of service in the academic field.

He told the students that constraints of resources and discrimination should not become hindrances to growth. Rather, they must be taken as challenges which can be successfully overcome with hard work and determination.

Further he asked the students to learn as many languages as possible so that they can take up work not just in Karnataka, but anywhere in India or abroad.

Dr. Tareen said that the Pondicherry Central University offers free education to all the girl and physically handicapped students. The transportation facility is free for all staff and students, along with subsidy in a number of student welfare programmes.

Dr. C.K.Renukarya, introduced Prof. Tareen highlighting his career achievements as Professor of Geology in Mysore University, the work he did as VC of J&K University, his service to higher education as Member of UGC and getting Padma Shri award in recognition of his service in the field of education.

Two-Day Conference on Ayur Nada from ‘Morrow

On the occasion of the 9th Chaturmasya of Sri Datta Vijayananda Teertha Swamiji, a two-day National Conference on Ayur Nada has been organised on Aug. 22 and 23 at Vishwa Prarthana Mandiram (Universal Prayer Hall) of Avadhoota Datta Peetham, Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Ashram on Ooty Road in city.

The conference will be inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Swamiji and Sri Datta Vijayananda Teertha Swamiji, followed by the inaugural address by chief guest Prof. K.S.Rangappa, Vice-Chancellor, Karnataka State Open University.

Prof. K.V.Krishna Murthy, Chairman, I-Serve, will deliver the keynote address which will be followed by technical sessions from 11.45 am.

The valedictory session will be held on Aug. 23 at 4.15 pm. District In-Charge Minister S.A.Ramdas, who will be the chief guest, will deliver the valedictory address.

The two-day conference on Ayur Nada is intended to focus on the applied aspects of ancient Indian sciences and on the aesthetics of Indian Classical Ragas and their therapeutic implications.

The conference also aims at opening up new avenues of research in healthcare systems, new software and hardware in computers, disaster management with predictions on weather and earthquakes, scientific dating of ancient events and allied areas.

The conference is beneficial to research scholars, students, faculties and general enthusiasts in the disciplines of Healthcare Sciences, Astronomy and Cosmology, Physical and Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences and allied sciences. Give back our land: Pramoda Devi Wadiyar urges Govt.

Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, wife of Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the scion of the royal family of Mysore and former MP, said this morning that the 1563 acres and 31 guntas of ‘B’-Kharab lands at the foot of Chamundi Hill are the private properties of the Palace.

Addressing a media conference at the Palace, She demanded that the area be surveyed and whatever unoccupied land remains, be handed over to the Wadiyars after issuing Khata in the name of the royal family.

“Till the framing of the Constitution of India and the nation becoming a republic, the then Maharaja was the supreme authority of the landed property coming under the State of Mysore and hence, his descendants are the rightful owners of the property,” said Pramoda Devi and added that the recent contention made by MLC G. Madhusudan, stating that the said land belonged to the State government, has been made without having proper knowledge about the matter.

She also deplored the statement made by former DC Harsha Gupta that the said land was ‘B’ Kharab and said that he too did not have adequate knowledge about the lands as it was directly inherited by Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar from his father Jayachamarajendra Wadi-yar, with the consent of his sisters who did not seek a share in this particular property. Jayacha-marajendra Wadiyar had declared his assets in 1950 and had distributed them among his family members then.

“Some portions of the lands were acquired by the civic authorities for creation of roads and other infrastructure, some areas were made into residential layouts and some pieces were gifted to various people by the Maharaja himself,” said Pramoda Devi.

Pramoda Devi urged that the remaining land that lies vacant — excluding the portions for which genuine Khatas have been issued earlier — be surveyed, Khata issued in the name of the descendants of the royal family and taxes affixed accordingly.

“We have been urging the authorities concerned to do this (issue Khata for the Palace property) since the past 18 years. However, none of the governments have cooperated,” she said and suspected political ill-will behind the inaction.

Wadiyar’s sisters Indrakshi Devi and Vishalakshi Devi, who were elsewhere in the Palace, were called in later to the media conference to prove their consent over the sisters not seeking shares in their brother’s property.

Narayana Hrudayala gets international accreditation

Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital in the city has been awarded international accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI).

“This is the second JCI accreditation the group has got,” Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, Chairman of Narayana Hrudayalaya said here on Saturday.

Earlier, Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital in Bangalore had got the JCI accreditation.

Claiming that it was the first hospital of the state to get the accreditation, Shetty said, “The international accreditation is a testament to the excellent standard of medical services provided by the hospital”.

A four-member team surveyed the hospital for four days and evaluated 1,133 different areas and functionalities of the hospital which included nursing, medical facility, hospital services, patient safety, infection control among others before awarding the accreditation, he added.

JCI is an non-profit independent entity that accredits and certifies health care programmes and organisations in the United States, work with organisations in over 80 countries.

Ex-IAS man to oversee digitization of records

The high court on Friday appointed retired IAS officer V Balasubramaniam as the court commissioner to oversee indexing , scanning and digitization of revenue records.
This includes the task of crosschecking the correctness of the data furnished. Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh passed the order while asking the authorities — DCs/Acs and revenue department — to extend all help, like police protection to the senior bureaucrat, at the time of field work/survey.
Balasubramaniam, who appeared in the court, gave his consent for the job. The judge said the government could lay hands on private lands based on public purposes and suitability so that misuse or abuse of discretion could be eliminated. Listing out the benefits of digitization of revenue records, he said having statistics of government land available in each village/taluk/district will help government take timely action if there is encroachment of land. It will also help in making use of land for industrialization /urbanization.
The court has fixed October 16 as the next date of hearing while granting time till October 8 to the authorities to complete the process of indexing/scanning and digitization of revenue records.

Order on hospital stayed

Adivision bench headed by Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen has stayed the June 30 government order handing over the 100-bed General Hospital at Bailhongal in Belgaum to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College run by Karnataka Lingayat Education Society.  The petitioners, Rafeeq Mugud Sab Badiger and two others, said the people are happy with the services and handing over of the hospital was done upon a representation submitted to the CM on November 17, 2011, by an MLA representing Bailhongal constituency.

Kannada cine actress Jayamala inaugurated Kutoohala Institute Director Ravindra Joshi’s ultra-modern studio named as “Bollywood Studio” at the Institute premises near RTO Circle here yesterday.

Speaking on the occasion, Jayamala said she was dumb- founded at the success of Kindarajogi children’s summer camp organised by the Institute for the past couple of years. Now the Institute has setup a full fledged dance studio, which certainly is going to be a boon for Mysoreans, she said and wished that the studio reaches new heights, attaining name, fame and glory.

‘Andolana’ Editor Rajashekhar Koti said Mysore was fortunate to have such a full-fledged dance studio and wished the studio grand success in the future.

Actress Soundarya (daughter of Jayamala) too wished the studio all success in its endeavour. The launching was followed by various forms of dance.

Mysore, Aug. 14- Former international cricketer Javagal Srinath today inaugurated the Janatha Bazar Generic Drug store in K.R. Hospital premises, adjacent to Dhanvantri Road.

Speaking on the occasion, Srinath said it is important to create awareness among the public to take preventive measures against diseases rather than looking for cure.

Srinath also stressed on the need for more such units.

Medical Education and District In-Charge Minister S.A. Ramdas, in his address, said this is the third generic drug store in the State after Bangalore and Hubli.

This drug store is aimed at providing medicines to the patients at affordable prices, he said and added that he had held talks with 14 major pharmaceutical manufacturers for supplying drugs at discounted rates.

Medicines prescribed by private practitioners too will be available at the drug store, he said and added that medicines will be distributed to orphanages, old age homes and rehabilitation centres through this drug store.

The Minister later performed guddali puja for the Outpatients Dispensary Building to be constructed in the K.R. Hospital premises. The programme was jointly organised by Mysore Medical College & Research Institute (MMC&RI) and Karnataka State Consumers’ Co-operative Federation, Bangalore.

MMC& RI Director Dr. Geetha K. Avadhani, Medical Education Principal Secretary Ramesh Zalki, Dr. B.G. Sagar, Dr. B. Krishnamurthy and others were present.

MNREGA helps green Bidar district

Forest Department has raised 30 lakh seedlings for distribution

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) has come as a boon to efforts at greening the district.

Over the course of seven years, the Forest Department has raised 30 lakh seedlings using funds available from the State’s drought-mitigation scheme under the MNREGA. The saplings have been distributed to gram panchayats.

They will be planted in public places like schools, government offices, footpaths, road medians, and in grazing lands and bunds.

The seedlings raised include evergreens, biofuel plants and green manure plants, among others. Bidar was among the four districts in the State in which the Union government started the Food for Work programme, which included long-term measures to prevent drought, such as afforestation and development of watersheds.

“We broke down the process into growing saplings of hardy species and evergreen fodder crops, digging pits for the saplings, and building check-dams and earthen bunds with community participation,” said zilla panchayat president Baburao Karbari, adding that the panchayat has planted nearly six lakh saplings in several villages in Aurad, the driest taluk in the district. The Forest Department has planted saplings in vast tracks of degraded land in Alur in Kamal Nagar, Jambagi and Balur and Hippalgaon villages in Aurad taluk.

Maintenance

“This year alone, we have raised over 3.5 lakh saplings under the MNREGA in several nurseries across the district. Nearly one lakh saplings have already been distributed to gram panchayats,” said M. Daulat Hussein, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Social Forestry). “The department will take care of the saplings for the first three years, after which they will be maintained by village or tanda residents, he said.

Variety

Neem is the most sought-after plant, and also well-suited to the district’s climate, along with Pongamia and Jatropha, which can be used to manufacture biofuel; Gliricidia, as green manure; vegetable- and fruit-bearing plants like drumstick and mango, and popular plants like kadu badami.

The department has also grown high-value saplings like teak and sandalwood. According to Mr. Hussein, over 10,000 sandalwood saplings are being raised and will be distributed to the public next year, while teak saplings are available in all nurseries in the district. He added that all the saplings will be distributed free of cost.
