8000 Ayurvedic doctors allowed to practise modern medicine

In a huge relief for 8000 Ayurvedic doctors who have obtained their degrees from universities in Bangalore and Goa and have been practising in Maharashtra for the last ten years, the state has now included them in Schedule A of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act and allowed them to practise modern medicine.

Schedule A, A1, B and D of the Act allow ayurvedic and Unani doctors to practice modern medicine. After completing the Bachelor of Ayurvedic medicine and surgery course at Rajeev Gandhi university of health science at Bangalore and Goa universities, students had applied for registration in the Maharashtra council of Indian medicine.

“However we were registered in Schedule E of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act,” says Dr Mandar Ranade, spokesperson for National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA). Schedule E is for those practitioners who do not have a proper institutional background. Hence after completing an institutional degree, getting registered in a schedule for non institutional graduates was not only discriminatory but insulted their qualification, doctors pointed out.

In Maharashtra, the BAMS graduates were registered in different schedules based on their educational qualifications.

“Despite the same degree, curriculum and syllabus these students were registered in Schedule E of the Maharashtra medical practitioners Act,” Dr Suhas Parchure, former president of NIMA, said. He along with others actively led a campaign for the students, as despite residing in various parts of Maharashtra they could not practise modern medicine.
On June 26, the government issued a resolution that included these ayurvedic doctors in Schedule A of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act. “It is a a victory of sorts. These were are institutionally qualified graduates of the Central Council of Indian Medicine recognized colleges and universities and yet they were being discriminated against,” says Parchure.

City’s Srikantha Rao is Indian ice-skating team coach

Mysorean K. Srikantha Rao, an Ekalavya Awardee and the General Secretary of the Mysore District Roller Skating Association, has been chosen as the Indian team coach for the short course Ice-skating team which will train at Inzel in Germany.

Srikantha Rao will be visiting Germany and will be in-charge of the four-member Indian Ice-skating team’s training camp to be held in Inzel, Germany from July 7 to 20, 2014.

City’s music scholar Dr. V.S.S. Acharya no more

City’s noted music scholar and State Sangeetha Vidwan awardee Dr. V.S. Sampathkumar Acharya (86), a resident of Lakshmipuram, passed away here this morning after a brief illness. He leaves behind wife Sangeetha Vidushi D.S. Leela, son V.S. Mohanram and daughter-in-law Anjana. Last rites will take place in city this evening.

Profile: Dr. V.S.S. Acharya, after passing BA (Hons.) in History from Maharaja’s College, did his B.Ed and later MA from Benaras University. He got a Ph.D in History from Mysore University. He completed Hindi Visharada also.

Dr. Acharya developed a passion for music literature and has authored several books on music. He has also come out with an encyclopedia on music, making it understandable to a common man. During last Dasara, Dr. Acharya was honoured with the prestigious State Sangeetha Vidwan award given by Department of Kannada and Culture, at a function at the Mysore Palace.

Cisco is building Asia’s first Internet of Things hub in the Electronics City, Bangalore. This state of the art hub will provide a ‘smart city environment’ to IT and Electronics companies and help them create the next generation IT enabled solutions.

Utilizing Cisco’s network infrastructure and expertise in creating, testing and implementing electronic product prototypes, companies located in that area can create solutions for City Infrastructure Management (CIM) which can include smart parking, advanced CC TV surveillance, smart street lighting which saves energy, smart water management solutions and more.

Last week, Cisco announced a partnership with Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA), which has developed Electronics City to start this new exciting project which combines smart city experience with Internet of Things.

Why Electronic City?

People close to this project are saying that this partnership has been encouraged to help Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) companies existing in the Electronic City, and encourage more Internet of Things enabled solutions and processes.

Broadly speaking, this new hub will successfully encapsulate both hardware and software expertise of Indian companies, and help them achieve futuristic solutions based on the existing technological platform provided by Cisco.

Electronics City is right now the biggest hub of software and electronics companies in Bangalore. More than 140 companies are spread across 800 acres, which includes some big names such as Infosys and Wipro. More than Rs 40,000 crore of revenue was generated from Electronic City last year.

The actual hub of Internet of Things, code named ‘Living Lab’ will be spread across 5 square kms inside the Electronics City. This hub will optimally utilize Cisco’s “Cisco Smart+Connected City Wi-Fi solution”, their network equipments such as routers, switches, access points etc which would be directly connected with the smart city’s optical fiber network.

Cisco & Internet of Things &The Future

Startups and companies which are participating in this mega project can also get access to Cisco’s Internet of Things (IoT) Innovation Fund, which promotes and encourages such companies to create applications and software to promote IoT culture and technology. They can also participate in the global Cisco IoT challenge.

The first phase of the project will start somewhere in October, and once fully functional, would be spread to different parts of Bangalore, making it a 100% smart city within next few years.

Internet of Things is commonly referred to a platform wherein every device is connected to one another, thereby creating a huge network of smart devices. As per a recent study by Gartner, by 2020 there would be estimated 26 billion devices connected by Internet! Such huge inter-related devices will churn out approximately44 trillion of data by 2020, which further tells us how much important Internet of Things has become for the whole world.

Earlier, we had reported that Gujarat government is currently building India’s first smart city near to Ahmedabad. Such smart cities will no doubt utilize Internet of Things technology for maximum output. Cisco has already informed the Indian government that they want to participate in this initiative to create smart cities, and the first step has already been taken.

DAC Road Races : Mysore’s Thippavva Sannaki wins in style

Mysore’s Thippavva Sannakki hogged the limelight by winning the women’s 6 km run at Deccan Athletic Club’s K. A. Nettakalappa Memorial Road Races held at Bellary recently.

Parasappa Harijol completed a fine double winning the men’s 12km event in the second leg.

Parasappa, who had won the Tumkur leg of the event two weeks ago, outwitted his rivals again to claim the top prize, pushing Kanakappa Donni to second place. Lingaraja Haliyal finished third in the competition, sponsored by Deccan Herald and Prajavani.

In the women’s 6km run, Thippava Sannaki of Mysore took the top spot. K. M. Archana came home second while B. K. Supriya finished third.

Mysore’s Priyanka, winner of the Tumkur leg, had seemed poised for another victory when she surged ahead. Leading for most part of the race, Priyanka, however, slipped and fell with two kilometres left for the finish. Priyanka then pulled out of the race after which Sannaki eased home.

Mohammad Noorul won the 2.5 km run for boys, pushing Lakshman to second spot and S. Thejas to third. Jayalakshmi emerged winner in the 2.5 km run for girls with Malleshwari Rathod taking the second spot and R. Usha ending up third.

Results: Men’s (12km run): 1. Parasappa Harijol (SAI, B’lore); 2. Kanakappa S Donni (Mundaragi); 3. Lingaraj Haliyal (Dharwad). Women (6km run): 1. Thippava Sanakki (Mysore); 2. K.M. City students Deia Urs and Vibha Mugwe top in CBSE Science Expo

The 2104 CBSE Regional-level Science Exhibition was held at Army Public School in Bangalore from June 27 to 29.

Over 80 teams representing about 50 Schools from all over the State participated in the science exhibition. The themes included technology, environment, health, energy, agriculture, robotics, mathematical models etc. Other topics included bio-plastic, unmanned aerial pesticide sprayer, fiber optics, windmill and many more.

City’s students — Deia S. Urs and Vibha G. Mugwe — 8th standard students of Vidya Vardhaka Sangha B. M. Shri Educational Institutions, Kuvempunagar, won the first place in the exhibition for their theme ‘Back to Roots: Natural Colours Vs Artificial Colours.’

‘Back to Roots’ is a concept of painting clay Ganesha idols with natural colours extracted manually from seeds, roots, leaves, flowers, fruits and vegetables in order to avoid polluting water even though the idols are immersed in lakes or ponds during Ganesha festival.

Bixa orellana was used to extract orangish red, clitorea ternata for blue, basella alba for purple, geranium for pinkish red, spinach for green, beetroot for brownish red, sandalwood bark for brown, turmeric for yellow. Lime for white, soap stone for cream and dried banana peel for black to name a few. Using these natural colours, three Ganesha idols were decoratively painted and kept at the science exhibition.

Guided by Anupana Padaki, a case study of a popular lake in Mysore was undertaken by the students. Water samples were taken and tested for pollutants and other contamination. Charts and presentation representing the contamination level of water due to immersion of oil painted Ganesha idols in the lake, its effect on the life of the fish and other dependent animals, interview with the locals about the type of Ganesha festival celebrations, percentage of people in the area celebrating Ganesha festival with oil painted Ganesha idols, and with eco-friendly Ganesha idols, and creating awareness to the locals about eco-friendly festival celebrations were shown by the duo at the exhibition.

Immaculate explanation, smart presentation of charts, facts and figures of the study and proper demonstration of the theme helped them to win the first place. They will be representing the Zone at the National-level Science exhibition to be held in Delhi in October 2014.

Skanray Technologies Pvt. Ltd, KIADB Industrial Area, Mysore, was adjudged the winner for Innovation in Competitiveness among MSMEs during the Innovation Excellence Awards ceremony held recently at Hotel Lalit Ashok in Bangalore.

This award has been instituted by Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI). Skanray presented their new product, Comet plus, a Pulse Oximeter with a host of innovative features packed in a low cost design.

There are more than 25,000 heritage monuments in the State which need to be conserved, said Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, Commissioner, Department of Archaeology and Museums.

He was speaking after inaugurating a painting exhibition titled ‘Noda Banni Namma Mysoora’ at Kukkarahalli Lake premises in city last evening.

Drawings of heritage structures created by artist Shivakumar H. Doddarasinakere, were on display attracted a huge number of art enthusiasts. The paintings included that of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, Chamaraja Wadiyar, Jayamarthanda and Varaha gates of the Amba Vilas Palace, the Clock Tower, Lawns in front of the Palace, Devaraja Market, etc.

Sri Somanatheshwara Swamiji of Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Mysore branch, Director of State Vokkaliga Sangha Prasanna, member of Niranthara Foundation Prasad Kundur, Principal of Kalaniketana School of Arts K.C. Mahadev Shetty and others were present.

The exhibition will be open to public from 6.30 am to 6.30 pm till July 7.

Mayor N.M. Rajeshwari inaugurated a three-day textile exhibition (buyer-seller meet) organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Textiles and the Regional office of the Textile Commissioner, Bangalore, at Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry on Vinoba road in city this morning.

In-charge DC Palaiah, ZP CEO P.A. Gopal, T.V. Maruthi, member, Committee of Administration, PDEXCIL (Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council), Mumbai, T.L. Balakumar, Deputy Director and office-in-charge, Regional office of the Textile Commissioner, Bangalore, Assistant Director Humayun and others were present on the occasion.

The exhibition is a fabric buyer-seller meet-cum-powerloom products mela. During the three-day expo, powerloom cloth and made-up manufacturers from various clusters across the country including Gadag, Salem, Chennai, Bangalore, Erode, Kolkata, Belgaum, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Chittur, Vellore, Dindigul etc. shall display their products and offer them for sale to wholesale and retail consumers of textiles. Further, a wide and latest range of textile products namely dhotis, sarees, dress materials, suiting and shirting materials, bed sheets, towels, napkins etc. are displayed at the expo, which concludes on July 6.

Infosys becomes first IT firm to file sustainability report

Global software major Infosys Ltd became the world’s first IT firm to file a sustainability report based on the latest global reporting initiative (GRI) framework, the IT bellwether said on Wednesday.

“As a value-driven company, we follow the highest levels of disclosure, besides ensuring compliance with the laws of the land.

“The sustainability report demonstrates our reporting practices and addresses expectations of our stakeholders,” the $8.3-billion company said in a statement.

GRI’s fourth generation (G4) is the widely respected sustainability reporting framework, worldwide.

Reporting as per G4 guidelines demonstrates the company’s commitment to advocate the adoption of integrated reporting practices globally.

The company’s integrated reporting framework provides synergy between its economic, social and environmental strategies, action plans and desired outcomes.

“The framework has helped us achieve our sustainability goals, reducing per capita electricity and fresh water consumption by 44 per cent and 35 per cent during the last fiscal (2013-14),” the statement said.

The company’s sustainability efforts have recently won gold at the Ashden awards in London, considered the Green Oscars, for its achievements in building energy efficiency.

The company also contributed to the well being of local communities through various projects undertaken by its foundation.
