Columbia Asia Hospital performs minimally invasive ‘Short Stay’ Knee Replacement Surgery reducing the recovery time from weeks to days

 A 58-year old man — John Sinclair — suffered with debilitating pain and stiffness in his right knee. The pain had started interfering with his daily activities as well, which made his mobility difficult. For a man who had dreamt of travelling across the length and breath of France, the knee pain was just physically unbearable and that too for an extremely active person like him.

Finally, after deciding to consult doctors at Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysore, Sinclair underwent an unique surgery to rid him off this excruciating pain.

A group of doctors from Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysore, led by Dr. B.R. Prashanth, Joint Replacement Surgeon, conducted a first-of-its-kind ‘Short Stay’ knee replacement surgery that helped Sinclair come out of his discomfort and lead a healthy life. Unlike a normal surgery, which takes weeks for a patient to recover, Short Stay surgery through its less invasive techniques reduces the hospital stay to a few days.

After the surgery, in a day’s time, Sinclair was able to ambulate with a walker and perform exercises as instructed by the doctors. In fact he was discharged home within 48 hours of the procedure, walking comfortably on his walker.

John Sinclair started experiencing the pain ever since he had a thigh bone fracture following an accident several years ago in the UK. Conventionally, a joint replacement surgery is thought of as a slow convalescence with a hospital stay for a week. However, with recent advancements in Arthoplasty procedures, ‘Short Stay’ knee replacement surgery can help a patient discharge from the hospital in a few days’ time.

Matka-Fod , First time in city, marks Krishna Jayanti

A grand procession marked the Krishna Jayanti celebrations organised under the joint aegis of District Administration and Zilla Yadava Samithi in city today.

DC C. Shikha launched the procession at Kote Anjaneya Swamy Temple at the Palace, in the presence of Chitradurga Yadava Mutt Seer Sri Krishnayadavananda Swamiji.

A jeep designed in the form of a horse-drawn carriage (Ashwa Ratha) and decorated with flowers in which a Krishna Idol was placed, with children attired in various dresses of Lord Krishna sitting beside, was the star attraction of the procession.

Several folk teams including Nandi Dhwaja, Veeragase Kunitha, Mahila Veeragase, Dollu Kunitha and Kerala folk art, featuring hundreds of artistes, accompanied the procession, while Yadava Samithi members holding aloft a child dressed as Sri Krishna, danced along the procession route.

A butter-milk pot (Mosaru Madike) was symbolically broken (as called Matka-fod in Maharashtra). The procession passed through K.R. Circle, D. Devaraj Urs road, Dewan’s road and Vinoba road before culminating at Nanjaraju Bahadur Choultry on Vinoba road where the celebrations took place.

MLC G. Mahusudhan, former Mayor D. Dhruvakumar, Corporator D. Nagabushan, Ex-Corporator M. Shivanna and others were present.

Haji Jaffer passes away

Veteran sports administrator and patron Haji Jaffer passed away here on Sunday.

He was 88.

Jaffer, an advocate by profession, was associated with cue sports and racing in a big way in Bangalore. He played a key role in the development of the Karnataka State Billiards Association and was its patron from 1991.

He also served the Bangalore Turf Club as the assistant judge and as first judge, besides making his mark as a commentator. Billiards fraternity benefitted immensely from the presence of Jaffer, who after joining the brigade of M Chenniappan, the founder of the KSBA, worked tirelessly to promote the sport.

It was Jaffer who mooted the idea of Women’s Nationals, successfully conducting the first edition in 1989. Jaffer, who was also the vice-president of the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India, also worked for the inclusion of cue sports in the Asian Games.

He leaves behind two daughters and a son. The KSBA has condoled his demise.

Nandan Nilekani Receives ‘Legend In Leadership’ Award

Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani is the first Indian to receive this prestigious award from Yale University.

Yale University felicitated the chairman of India’s Unique Identification Database Authority and Infosys’ co-founder Nandan Nilekani with the ‘Legend in Leadership Award’. Nilekani is the first Indian to receive this award.

The ‘Legend in Leadership Award’ was created 20 years ago to honour current and former CEOs who serve as living legends to inspire chief executives across industries, sectors and nations.

The award was presented to Nilekani by Richard C. Levin, president, Yale University, at the Yale CEO Leadership Summit of The Chief Executive Leadership Institute. The summit convened 100 business leaders in New Delhi, to discuss the theme of ‘Navigating the Global Oceans of Opportunity for Indian Business’.

Nilekani, who co-founded Infosys in 1981 and served as CEO from 2002 to 2007, holds the rank of cabinet minister as the first chairman of the Indian government’s newly created ‘Unique Identification Database Authority’. The universal ID card is expected to help ensure that most of the billions of dollars India and other organisations spend on aid reach the people for whom it was intended.

In 2006, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian honours awarded by the Government of India.

Inter-Railway Athletic meet : City’s Meghana wins bronze

Mysore :

City’s athlete K.R. Meghana taking part in the All India Inter Railway Athletic meet 2014 held at Nehru stadium, Chennai recently won the bronze medal in the women’s 800 mts event.

Meghana represented East Coast Railway in the championship and won the bronze medal in the 800 mts event with a timing of 2:16:00 sec. She will represent Odhisa State in the Open National Athletic Meet to be held at Patna from 10th October 2014. Meghana is being coached by M.N. Sadashiva Rao, Retired District Physical Education Officer, Mysore.

Mysore’s Bharath of South Western Railway also won a bronze medal in the men’s 4x400m relay event, representing SWR in the Inter-Railway meet.

Thippavva Sannakki of South Western Railway, Mysore took part in the women’s 5000 mts event and finished seventh.

Nandan Nilekani to be given Legend in Leadership award by Yale

IT Czar Nandan Nilekani  has been selected for the ‘Legend in Leadership Award’, becoming the first Indian to receive Yale University’s top honour.

Nilekani, 54, Chairman of India’s Unique Identification Database Authority will be presented with award given by the Yale University President Richard C Levin at the Yale CEO Leadership Summit of The Chief Executive Leadership Institute in New Delhi on November 6.

The summit will convene one hundred world-renowned business leaders in New Delhi on November 5 and 6 to discuss the theme of ‘Navigating the Global Oceans of Opportunity for Indian Business,’ a media release said.

The ‘Legend in Leadership Award’ was created 20 years ago to honor current and former CEOs who serve as living legends to inspire chief executives across industries, sectors, and nations.

Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase; Robert Iger of The Walt Disney Company; Stephen Schwarzman of The Blackstone Group; Roger Enrico of PepsiCo; John Pepper of Proctor & Gamble and Don Keough of The Coca-Cola Co were some of the other people who received the prestigious honour.

Others who had earlier received the honour include were McKinsey founder Marvin Bower;Richard Teerlink of Harley-Davidson.; Holiday Inn founder Kemmons Wilson; financier Wilbur Ross; and Lou Gerstner of IBM.

Somashekar (SWR Workshop, Mysore) and Lingaraju (Mysore Police) — who will be representing India in the Asian Masters Athletic Meet 2014 to be held at Japan from Sept. 19, 2014, at a function held at Lions Hall, Mysore, on Saturday.

Raju, Works Manager, SWR Workshop, Ravi Kumar, Vice-President, MDJA, L. Manjunath, Dasara Sports Sub-Committee, Chairman and Benaka Prasad, SAI Athletic Coach, University of Mysore, Sumana Narashima Murthy, President, MDMAA, Sathyanarayana, Hon. City’s Skaters for Asian Championships

Two roller skaters from city, Dr. Varsha S. Puranik and Akash Aradhya, will represent India in the 16th Asian Roller Skating Championships to be held at Haining City, China, from September 17.

Dr. Varsha, who is pursuing her Post Graduation in Microbiology at JSS Medical College, Mysore, will be participating in seven events in the women’s section — 300 mts., 500 mts. and 1000 mts. Rink Races and 200, 500 mts. Road Races and Road Relay.

Akash, a 1st year B.Com student of D. Banumaiah’s College, Mysore, will be taking part in the 300, 500 mts. Track and 200, 500 mts. Road Races and Track and Road Relay events, in the in the men’s category.

The two Mysoreans are part of the seven member India team which will be leaving Mumbai for China on Monday evening.

Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up – Pablo Picasso.

These words of Pablo Picasso holds good for every child who is born on the earth. Every child involves in multiple activities and it is for the parents and teachers to identify the talent of the kid and encourage them in the endeavours to achieve great heights in their field of interest. There have been examples of people who have been able to achieve their goals both in their professional lives and the career they pursue with a passion.

But, for students of medical education and medicos it is difficult to take some time off to pursue their hobby. Only a few find sometime to pursue their hobby and excel.

Recently, the JSS Medical College on the occasion of 99th birth anniversary of Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swamiji had organised an art exhibition at its premises where the medicos, students and staff showcased their art works which ranged from photography, paintings to pencil sketching.

‘Lost in Ecstasy’, a pencil sketch by Dr. P.C. Rajath, a House Surgeon, was eye-catching. While, the painting of a dancing couple by Soumya Singh and Pahari painting of Subhra Singh, both students of 3rd MBBS also attracted a lot of attention.

Speaking to SOM, Sowmya Singh said that ‘Dancing Couple’ is a depiction of the couple who do not have any connection with the outer world but enjoy their time together.

Continuing with painting Dr. Malar, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Anatomy, JSS Medical College, who has painted the portrait of Lord Ganesh in Mysore Style of painting, said that she took around three years to complete the art work and added that it was a method to get rid of her stress. Dr. Malar has also painted an Owl using coffee powder.

The students have also showed their skills with photography with Dr. D.M. Vinay, a house surgeon, displaying photographs which he clicked at various National Parks across the country.

A photograph of a Tiger walking down the rocks clicked at Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh, was one of the highlights of the exhibition. “Interest in photography started when I got involved in bird watching, animal census and tours with photographers. My aim is to capture whatever I see and show it to the people”, said Dr. D.M. Vinay.

This apart, the Dashavathra, pencil sketch by Taramani, a Second Division Assistant, JSS University, was mesmerising.
