City’s Uma sets new meet record

City’s upcoming athlete P.S. Uma of DYES, Mysore and a Ist Year B.Com student of Teresian FGC, Mysore, taking part in the Karnataka State Junior and Senior Athletic Championships 2014 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bangalore, hogged the limelight in the girls under-20 section by throwing the shot put to a new meet record distance of 13.03 mts on Thursday.

Uma coached by Vasanth at the DYES, Mysore, went passed the meet record of 12.47 meters set by T.P. Preeti in 1993.

Uma’s previous laurels include a gold medal in Rural Nationals held in Kolkata in the year 2012-13 and a second place finish in the Pre-University Nationals in Ranchi in February, this year.

In the men’s high jump, Supreeth Raj of Dakshina Kannada emerged winner, clearing 2.10 metres. The 25-year-old Bopanna clocked 10.40 seconds to emerge victorious in the men’s 100 mts sprint while Padmini powered to victory in the 100 mts sprint in the women’s section with a time of 12.00 seconds, warding off a stiff challenge from Bhuvi Shankar of Alva’s, who finished 0.2 seconds behind for the silver.

V. Priyanka of DYES, Mysore secured the silver medal in the 800 mts in the girls U-20 section. In the men’s High Jump, Mysore District’s T.S. Ravi secured the bronze clearing a height of 1.75 mts.

Former Secretary of Mahajana, G.S. Subrahmanyam no more

Veteran Freedom Fighter and former Hon. Secretary of Mahajana Education Society (MES), G.S. Subrahmanyam passed away at a private hospital in city this morning owing to ill-health. He was 89.

He leaves behind his wife Subbalakshmi, three sons — G.S. Kumar, senior journalist, The Times of India, Bangalore, G.S. Badrinath, LIC Agent, G.S. Nagesh, Supervisor, Parvathi Kalyana Mantap and daughter G.S. Usha.

Apart from serving at MES, Subrahmanyam had also served under various capacities in many other educational institutions and associations in Mysore.

MES President R. Vasudeva Murthy, former MUDA Chairman C. Basavegowda, staff of various Mahajana Educational Institutions, journalists from Mysore and others paid their last respects to the departed soul at his residence in VV Mohalla here.

As a mark of respect, Mahajana Education Society had declared holiday to all its institutions.

Last rites were held at Chirashanthidhama in Gokulam at 3 pm today.

G.S. Subrahmanyam: A True Gandhian:

Mysore, Sept. 19 (VNS) – Born on Nov. 8, 1928 in Kollegal, Chamarajanagar District, Gobbalipura Suryanarayan Subrahmanyam did is primary education in his native and graduated from Maharaja College in Mysore. He later completed his Bachelor in Teaching from Government Teachers College, Mysore and MA (English) from University of Mysore.

As a student, Subrahmanyam participated in freedom struggle and in Quit India Movement. He was instrumental in founding Tilaka Sangha in Mysore and also in bringing leaders such as Hardikar and J.P. Narayan to Mysore.

Influenced by Gandhian Principles, Subrahmanyam developed deep interest in Sarvodaya Movement and remained a Gandhian throughout his life.

He was associated with Sri Ramakrishna Ashram from 1936 (volunteer during Sri Ramakrishna Centenary celebrations). He worked as a warden in the Ramakrishna Students Hostel from 1943 to 1953 during which former MP Tulsidas Dasappa and former External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna were the hostel inmates.

Subrahmanyam served as Vice-Principal at Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala, Mysore, from 1953 till his retirement in 1990. He was the founder Staff Secretary of the Old Boys Association.

Subrahmanyam, who was associated with Mahajana Education Society for more than four decades, served as Secretary for nearly three decades and as Treasurer for two terms.He also served as the President of Mathru Mandali Educational Institutions and was a close associate of H.C. Dasappa.

Subrahmanyam was popular among his students for his soft spoken and caring nature. He will be missed by his students and a large number of well-wishers.

Ramakrishna Ashram’s Swami Muktidanandaji and Jagadatmanandaji, Dr. Prabhu Shankar, Theatre Person Dr. Na. Ratna, old students of Ramakrishna Vidyashala, students from Mathru Mandali School, Mahajana Educational institutions, representatives from Suttur Mutt and others paid their tributes to G.S. Subrahmanyam.

Teachers learn new teaching methods at workshop

R Mangala, a teacher at Nirmala School, was in search of a new method to teach her students. Her search ended at a workshop conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), State and Private Schools’ Management Association (CISPMAM). The workshop introduced Comprehensive Continuous Education (CCE) for the participants at Guru Residency Hotel here on Friday.

Mangala, who has 20 years of experience in teaching, said: “This is my first ever workshop on teaching methods. Like me, I’m sure many teachers from government and private schools have got their doubts cleared. In spite of having two decades of teaching experience, I found a need to get myself updated for the benefit of my students.”

Speaking on the workshop, she said: “I shall implement the methods what I learnt here in my classes. But only one workshop doesn’t solve all our problems. CISPAM should conduct such workshops frequently,” she suggested.

Zilla panchayat deputy secretary K Shivegowda, who inaugurated the workshop, called upon teachers to get updated to suit the changing needs of children with regard to education. “We should accept the change and adopt new methods in order to help students,” he added.

CISPMAM president R Raghu said there is a huge demand for technological education. “There is a dearth of good teachers who can ensure quality education in private and government schools. They should come forward to face the challenges in education. This workshop is aimed at honing the skills of teachers, and help them learn new methods of teaching,” he added.

“Many teachers have been facing problems in teaching children for whom old methods do not suit. But still, many teachers are not discussing their problems with senior education officers due to fear. This workshop serves as a platform for them to share their problems and exchange ideas,” he added.

The following weight-lifters of the Academy of Weight-lifters, Mysore, who took part in the Karnataka State Senior Weight-lifting Championship-2014 held at Brahmavara Sports Club, Brahamavara, Udupi, on Sept. 12 and 13 fared well and won medals:

N. Praveen (62 kg class) won silver medal with a total lift of 190 kg (84+106=190); K. Ullas (77 kg class) won a silver medal with a total lift of 207 kg (90+117=207). Both the weight-lifters will be representing the State in the Senior National Weight-lifting Championships.

Former Head Master of Hardwicke School, Sanath Kumar passes away

Former Head Master of Hardwicke High School and former Senate Member of Mysore University, S.G. Sanath Kumar, passed away at his residence on JLB Road here early this morning. He was 86.

He leaves behind his daughter Dr. Pamela Sanath, son Ranjith Sanath, Deputy Manager of KSFC in Mandya, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

His wife Ann Meena had predeceased him in the year 1986.

A Rotarian since 1968, Sanath Kumar was the founder-member of Ideal Jawa Rotary Children School. He was the Mission De Chief to start Ideal Jawa Rotary High School for which he was the Secretary and Correspondent till 2004.

Rotary Mysore President Rtn. S.V. Sridhar, PP Rtn. S.K. Sanjay, Journalists Rajashekar Koti and N. Niranjan Nikam and others paid their last respects to the departed soul.

Funeral will be held today at the CSI Cemetery on Mahadevapura Road in Gandhi Nagar at 4.30 pm.

Sanath Kumar: A multifaceted personality

Born on June 26, 1928 in city, S.G. Sanath Kumar did his primary education at Karunapura School, high school at Hardwicke High School and graduated in Science from St. Philomena’s College during 1949-52.

Being a football player and an athlete, he represented Mysore and Challenge Union in both athletics and football.

Sanath Kumar started his career as a Sports Reporter in Deccan Herald and then joined the Indian Railways, which he quit to take up teaching at Hardwicke High School in 1954.

He did his Bachelor’s in Education (B.Ed) in 1955 and completed his Master’s in Education (M.Ed) in 1960 and became the Head Master in 1968.

During his tenure as the Head Master, Hardwicke School was ranked as one of the best schools in the city and was instrumental in starting the Hardwicke English Medium Primary School in 1979 and in the same year he was presented the State Award as ‘Best Head Master.’

Sanath Kumar was alsoan NCC Officer and Sports Secretary of the school during which the school got numerous awards. His love for gardening helped the school in winning awards at Dasara Flower Show and Ornamental Garden Show for a record 14 years and had also maintained a mini Zoo in the school.

He was also the Correspondent for all Church of South India (CSI) Schools in Mysore and Mandya districts and also served as the Secretary of Karnataka Southern Diocesan Education Society for 11 years and retired in the year 1984.

Even after retirement, he kept his enthusiasm and zeal to serve and revived the YMCA and was its Regional Chairman and was still serving the organisation as its Secretary.

The State Government had nominated him as a Member of the Mysore University Senate during 1983-84.

Apart from educational activities, Sanath Kumar had been actively involved in a number of Social and Cultural Clubs like Mysore Race Club, Mysore Sports Club and Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Club. He served as the Secretary of Mysore Sports Club, President and Secretary of The Graduates Co-operative Bank, Member of the Mission Hospital Administrative Committee, Member of the Mysore University Football Selection Committee and was the magazine Editor of the Rotary Club.

His house on JLB road was once called as the Noah’s Ark, as it was full of birds and animals like rabbits, deer, peacock, monkey, varieties of dogs, cats, tortoise and other animals.

The prize distriion ceremony of the two-day NR Group Golf Championship-2014 was held at JWGC Club House on Sunday evening.

R. Guru, Chairman, NR Group and Arjun Ranga, Partner, NR Group, presented the trophies to the winners. P. M. Ganapathy, President- JWGC, Dr. Puttabasappa, Captain-JWGC, B.M.Nagesh, Hon. Physical Education Teachers Academy Trust launched

A group of like minded Physical Education Teachers and Coaches from the Mysore University affiliated colleges have formed the Physical Education Teachers Academy Trust in city.

The Trust was officially launched at a function held yesterday at Maharaja’s College Centenary Hall by Mysore University VC Prof. K.S. Rangappa.

Prof. Rangappa welcomed the initiative and wished that the PET Academy gets recognised as part of the Mysore University so that it can get the needed facelift. He announced that the Mysore University will come forward and help the activities of the PET Trust.

Dr. C. Krishna, Director, DPE, University of Mysore and President of the Trust, informed the gathering that the Trust has been formed with a wide objective of promoting sporting activities, physical education programmes in general, conducting cultural events, social service, helping sports-persons in need and also helping the needy Physical Education Teachers families who are in need of financial help.

In the days to come, the body aims to conduct educational, social and sports developmental related activities on a larger scale which will pave way for the improvement in sporting activities which will in turn help the citizens to lead a healthier life.

He also informed the gathering that, this year, the Trust started its activities by setting up a endowment fund to facilitate the conduct of the Mysore University Inter-Collegiate Gold Cup Football Tourney conducted in memory of late Chief Justice Hombegowda. The Trust also helped gymnast Anantha Rao, who has been paralysed due to the injury suffered during Dasara Games, with a lap-top.

Prof. Seshanna, speaking on the occasion, said that much more can be done by the Trust and its future members if they work with a vision.

Yakshagana by Mahaganapathi Yashagana Mandali, Dharmasthala, followed the inauguration of the PET Trust.

 A 58-year old man — John Sinclair — suffered with debilitating pain and stiffness in his right knee. The pain had started interfering with his daily activities as well, which made his mobility difficult. For a man who had dreamt of travelling across the length and breath of France, the knee pain was just physically unbearable and that too for an extremely active person like him.

Finally, after deciding to consult doctors at Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysore, Sinclair underwent an unique surgery to rid him off this excruciating pain.

A group of doctors from Columbia Asia Hospital, Mysore, led by Dr. B.R. Prashanth, Joint Replacement Surgeon, conducted a first-of-its-kind ‘Short Stay’ knee replacement surgery that helped Sinclair come out of his discomfort and lead a healthy life. Unlike a normal surgery, which takes weeks for a patient to recover, Short Stay surgery through its less invasive techniques reduces the hospital stay to a few days.

After the surgery, in a day’s time, Sinclair was able to ambulate with a walker and perform exercises as instructed by the doctors. In fact he was discharged home within 48 hours of the procedure, walking comfortably on his walker.

John Sinclair started experiencing the pain ever since he had a thigh bone fracture following an accident several years ago in the UK. Conventionally, a joint replacement surgery is thought of as a slow convalescence with a hospital stay for a week. Matka-Fod , First time in city, marks Krishna Jayanti

A grand procession marked the Krishna Jayanti celebrations organised under the joint aegis of District Administration and Zilla Yadava Samithi in city today.

DC C. Shikha launched the procession at Kote Anjaneya Swamy Temple at the Palace, in the presence of Chitradurga Yadava Mutt Seer Sri Krishnayadavananda Swamiji.

A jeep designed in the form of a horse-drawn carriage (Ashwa Ratha) and decorated with flowers in which a Krishna Idol was placed, with children attired in various dresses of Lord Krishna sitting beside, was the star attraction of the procession.

Several folk teams including Nandi Dhwaja, Veeragase Kunitha, Mahila Veeragase, Dollu Kunitha and Kerala folk art, featuring hundreds of artistes, accompanied the procession, while Yadava Samithi members holding aloft a child dressed as Sri Krishna, danced along the procession route.

A butter-milk pot (Mosaru Madike) was symbolically broken (as called Matka-fod in Maharashtra). The procession passed through K.R. Circle, D. Devaraj Urs road, Dewan’s road and Vinoba road before culminating at Nanjaraju Bahadur Choultry on Vinoba road where the celebrations took place.

MLC G. Mahusudhan, former Mayor D. Dhruvakumar, Corporator D. Nagabushan, Ex-Corporator M. Shivanna and others were present.

Haji Jaffer passes away

Veteran sports administrator and patron Haji Jaffer passed away here on Sunday.

He was 88.

Jaffer, an advocate by profession, was associated with cue sports and racing in a big way in Bangalore. He played a key role in the development of the Karnataka State Billiards Association and was its patron from 1991.

He also served the Bangalore Turf Club as the assistant judge and as first judge, besides making his mark as a commentator. Billiards fraternity benefitted immensely from the presence of Jaffer, who after joining the brigade of M Chenniappan, the founder of the KSBA, worked tirelessly to promote the sport.

It was Jaffer who mooted the idea of Women’s Nationals, successfully conducting the first edition in 1989. Jaffer, who was also the vice-president of the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India, also worked for the inclusion of cue sports in the Asian Games.

He leaves behind two daughters and a son. The KSBA has condoled his demise.
